Two daughters with the same initial?

DD1 is called Elizabeth, but we call her Lizzy. My second DD is due in Nov. DH really likes the name Emily, but I am wary of giving it too much consideration because I'm worried about the confusion that two 'Miss E ...'s will cause.

Is it going to be a big problem? I keep thinking of post mix ups, doctors records etc. He doesn't think it will be a big issue...

I think if you call her Lizzy it'll be okay - you could have miss L on letters to her? or use both initials (provided you don't start both middle names with the same initial Wink)

sarahseashell · 29/07/2012 21:44

p.s. both lovely names by the way

The doctor's records should be fine because they also check your date of birth. The only real problem I can forsee is the post while they both live at home.

Do/will they have a middle name? If so then they could use their full name as their title for all post, so it would be addressed to

Miss E R xxx or Miss E P xxx

We have this situation. My two are grown up now but both still at home.
I have an Elizabeth, also called Lizzy within the family Grin, and an Eleanor
( Nelly ) as the situation about initials never occurred to me. It's ok if middle initials are used but they aren't always and we have had the odd letter opened by the wrong Miss E ....

It isn't a huge problem, more of an occasional irritation.

I would give them each their own initial. There are 26 letters and lots of lovely names to choose from Smile.

I have also considered this issue as my favourite girls' name begins with the same initial as dd1's name - I decided that I like the name more than I can imagine this being a problem. Just need to convince dh now...! Emily and Elizabeth sound lovely together by the way.

I have two dds with the same initial. I really wanted to avoid it , so poor dd2 was un-named for six weeks while we dithered over her name. In the end we just decided that was the name we liked the best, and so we used it. Her nn has a different initial, in the same way that your does. She has a different middle initial to her sister.

CelticOlympian · 29/07/2012 22:23

My sister and I have the same first and middle initials. It has never really been a big deal. Maybe a few times we opened each other's post. I wouldn't stress about it if you love the name.

We will have 4 sets of twins at the school I work at next year - and each set has the same initials! You'd be amazed at how many of the online services we use create usernames with initial+surname...

letseatgrandma · 29/07/2012 22:42

My girls have got the same initial-it's not a problem at all.

Runningblue · 29/07/2012 22:54

My friend actively sought names for her two with the same initial...

I have a Chloe and a Charlotte and have never thought about it until i read OP, I suppose it is going to cause problems with post etc

AliMonkey · 29/07/2012 22:59

As a teenager, I was friends with two sisters whose names began with the same initial who were very close in age. It caused a few issues when they opened each others post and found out some private stuff. My DC love opening post and I can see one going into meltdown if they had the same initial and opened the others post by mistake - not that they have lots of post, but when they do get it, it's very exciting to a 5 and 7 year old!

You might also have issues if you want to book eg plane tickets - my mother and I are both Mrs X ZZZZ, and we did once have a situation where we booked tickets online and the airline cancelled one thinking we had made a mistake. We have now learnt that we have to use middle initial as well (might have been better if it had meant we just couldn't ever go on holiday together ...!)

I have same problem. Girl's name I most like begins with same initial as dd and is due a couple of days before dd's bday so all those cards coming in the same week. Eeek. Maybe we will have a boy.

LeandarBear · 29/07/2012 23:11

It is ok but, and I speak from experience Grin a middle name with a different initial would be a great idea.
