Rebecca, Jemima, Fiona or Julia?

We're a bit stuck with girls names if imminent DC3 is a girl, and keep going around in circles discussing the following shortlist:

Rebecca
Jemima
Fiona
Julia (which, although I love, I don't like it shortened. Caroline was discarded for the same reason - love Caroline but less keen on Carrie/Caz etc).

with Beatrice as the middle name.

Would be grateful for thoughts on the above/other suggestions - thanks in advance

Jemima is gorgeous. Julia nice too - I agree traditional abbreviations ie 'Ju', 'Jules' or 'J' are a bit grim. But generally if you start off a shortened form & stick to it, you can make that override - have you considered 'Lia' (pronounced like the usual ending) as an abbreviation instead, which has cute baby potential too ie LiLi etc?

Julia is lovely, a classic timeless name. I don't think it needs to be shortened.

I vote Julia too but that's because I am one... and it is VERY rarely shortened.

Julia Beatrice is fabulous! I second Lia as an enforced nickname.

Thanks for all the messages. We're not quite at any decision yet but plenty food for thought. With the other two we'd pretty much decided on names well before the birth, and it feels like it would be quite a leap of faith to go into it with a shortlist and hope to make the right decision afterwards amidst crazy hormones, exhaustion and helpful input from visiting relatives with Opinions!

Obviously nicknames happen at school, and somewhat ironically DD1 whose name doesn't lend itself to an obvious shortening is now actively wanting one and getting irritated that she doesn't have one (yet) - so it seems you can't win! I'd wondered whether where there is a well-established shortening, as with Rebecca/Becky/Bex and Julia/Jules, whether people might assume automatically that it is that and shorten it anyway, but by that stage she'd be able to give her own opinion on the matter. Lia is nice for Julia, I wouldn't have thought of that, and Lili gorgeous, but DD2 is Lydia so probably too similar. Maybe I'm overthinking all the nickname side of things just slightly ! It's good to know that there are some Julias and Rebeccas out there who are known by their full names though.

Jemima is obviously the one out of these that people feel most strongly about one way or the other and indeed neither my mother nor MIL would approve one little bit, not that this is necessarily a major factor in the decision.

Fiona Beatrice - Fi-Be. Smile

Love jemima! And I'm another Julia who doesn't get her name shortened (although to be fair I refused to be called jules when I was little because I thought it was a boys name).

MyPetMonsterAndMe · 02/08/2012 15:04

I'm a Julia and I like my name. There are only about 3 people who call me Jules and two of them are my parents, friends never seem to shorten it.
