just curious - posting on another thread and wondering if OP will find 'the name' for her there. I went with one name rather than another on foot of MN jury - just seemed a useful straw poll of reactions. Did you use a name because of the MN threads?

I'm not sure how useful the reactions of the mumsnet 'jury' (really just a bunch of random internet users Smile) is. Most names are instantly described as 'too unusual', 'too chav', 'too posh', 'too popular', 'too foreign', 'too much like the school bully', 'too much like a soap character', etc.

I did bump one girl's first name off of my list because I had no idea so many people would view it as masculine. That was actually quite helpful because I want names that are easily seen as feminine for any daughter I have.

that's kind of what I mean - it's just a gauge of reaction - not reliable, but gives a sense of how it might be received from people that don't actually care

I'd be more likely to do the opposite. In fact - we are! Mumsnet seems to HATE the name Spike ("it's a nickname", "it sounds like a dog's name" etc) but its what we've chosen for DS2 arriving end of September Grin

rhetorician · 25/07/2012 21:23

well I think it's cute - good luck with him!

I think Spike is great for a boy!

But I do think a lot of posters may well avoid names that are loved by everyone because these will, by definition, become very popular (and eventually unpopular again).

I got some lovely suggestions on mine- things we hadn't considered at the time. We ended up not using any of them and sticking to our original choice and are now regretting it, for a number of reasons and considering adding a name to DD's BC by deed poll- which would be one of the names put forward on our name thread.

worryingwillow · 25/07/2012 22:39

I had never even heard of the name dd now has until an MNer suggested it :)

UnrequitedSkink · 25/07/2012 23:06

I had a wobble about DS's name in the very early days and was reassured by MNetters that it was as lovely as I thought. Saved me having a huge row with DH over changing it, and I'm still glad I kept it!

RillaBlythe · 25/07/2012 23:08

Not really. I used MN to get name suggestions, but both DDs's names get a divided reaction on MN.

Popoozle · 26/07/2012 00:33

Nah, DD is called Poppy. I definitely didn't choose that on MN advice as it's fairly well hated on here Grin.

I did ask for opinions on Minnie though, and ruled it out when numerous people told me it meant fanjo Shock.

What I love about MN baby name threads is that you can ask "what about Poppy?" (for example) and get a reply such as "awful name, what about Maude?". Only on MN Grin.

rhetorician · 26/07/2012 10:31

popoozle lol; likewise Daire (dara) got ruled out because everyone thought it was a boy's name (can be both, actually)...still slightly sorry about it. I think Poppy is lovely btw
