Lyric and Cormack?

DH and I are finding it hard to agree on names and keep vetoing each others choices.

We do agree that we want something reasonably unusual, but not something which would generate mockery. So, two names which we have actually managed to agree on...

For a girl: Lyric Rose Bryson
For a boy: Cormack Earl Bryson

So... immediate reactions - Hilarity? Quite nice? Don't inflict that on an innocent child you madwoman? Grin

I'm not crazy about Lyric.

Cormac is nice.

babyblabber · 23/07/2012 03:41

Not crazy about lyric but it's not terrible and if you both like it you should go for it.

Have never seen cormac spelt with a k unless it's part of the surname McCormack so I'd spell it the normal way but it's a lovely name.

tammytoby · 23/07/2012 06:45

Both fine. Unusual but not odd.

Badgerina · 23/07/2012 07:40

V unusual, and rather nice. Not too sure about Lyric. How about Lyra?

KenDoddsDadsDog · 23/07/2012 07:44

Love Cormac but please don't use the K.

RillaBlythe · 23/07/2012 09:00

Cormack with a K is very definitely a surname to me. Don't use the K.

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 23/07/2012 09:03

yy Cormac not Cormack
I don't rate lyric. Sorry

shimmy0 · 23/07/2012 09:33

Cormac/ Cormack first then Lyric last. I think kids would really take the p* out of that one sorry. If a Lyric had gone to school where I came from they would be singing to him all day or doing something equally silly.

honeytea · 23/07/2012 10:13

I love the name Lyric.

I'm not to fond of the name cormack, it sounds a little to like tarmac.

squoosh · 23/07/2012 10:35

Love Cormac but definitely without the K.

Lyric, can see this on a hippyish kind of girl. She may not be a hippyish kind of girl though.

jkklpu · 23/07/2012 10:38

not Lyric
yes to Cormac

LiteraryMermaid · 23/07/2012 11:30

Cormac is lovely, and Mac is a great nn. Looks wrong with the K though. I like the idea of Lyric, but something about it doesn't work for me - sounds a bit 'forced', iyswim. How about Lyra or Lilac?

Littlecherublegs · 23/07/2012 12:12

Cormac (without the 'k') is nice; not keen on Lyric at all though.

Maybe Lydia, Lyra, Lora, Lavendar?

PenisVanLesbian · 23/07/2012 12:19

Cormac doesn't have a k on it, please don't stick a random letter onto a proper name.

7to25 · 23/07/2012 12:23

My son (22) is Cormac. Like both names

AThingInYourLife · 23/07/2012 12:53

" it sounds a little to like tarmac."

It doesn't unless you say tarmuck.

squoosh · 23/07/2012 12:58

In Scotland they do say Cormac to rhyme with tarmac.

In Ireland we say Cormac to sound like Cormuck. I prefer this pronunciation.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 23/07/2012 13:03

Both nice, I think. Lyric isn't usually a name (unlike Cormac) so she will have a lifetime of explaining and spelling out and saying "yes like the words of a song" but if you think it's worth it for her, go for it.

amck5700 · 23/07/2012 13:55

What about Melody instead? Cormac is nice, Lyric sounds more like a name for a boy or some reason.

shimmy0 · 23/07/2012 15:25

I'm from N. Ireland and I've never heard it pronounced Cormuck, it's generally said as Cormick in my hometown. Just a regional accent thingy.

LineRunner · 23/07/2012 19:49

Lyric. Lyrry. Ly.

Kind of growing on me. Which is not usually a recommendation of sanity. Smile

EvilEnabler · 24/07/2012 00:58

Thank you all for your thoughts.

Cormac passes muster on MN - glad to hear it. I will obediently drop the 'K' so I don't look like one of those crazy parents who add random letters to existing names so their child will be unique Grin I just wanted to see if Cormack with a K would fly as it is a family surname and I kind of wanted to keep it alive in a new form, especially as I love the name Cormac. But it doesn't work - no matter though as I think Cormac is a keeper anyway.

Yes, Lyric. Its a bit of a funny one isn't it? The first time DH suggested it I gave him the Hmm and asked him if he was feeling particularly rockstar-ish or something. But it grew on me. I don't love it, but I have come to like it.

But I could be convinced to drop Lyric if I could come up with something better which DH will find acceptable too.

DH has also suggested Melody and Cadence (stick with the musical theme eh DH?) I like Melody, but it would inevitably get shortened to Mel - and I have bad memories of lots of cowbags named Mel, so the perfectly nice name is a bit tainted to me.

What about Cadence? Is that too hideous? I also like Danae, Rosaline, Jolie, Verity, Dana, Perdita, Mariella. DH hasn't objected violently to any of them.

Fucking awful.

agendabender · 24/07/2012 02:26

my son is a Cormac, so I love it. English people are always calling him Cor-mac, McCormac or even McCauley though (annoying!). I have seen it spelled with a "K," and think that if it's a family surname I would risk it. No-one is actually going to bat an eyelid in real life.

Of your girl's names I like Mariella best, although irritating that it is reminiscent of Mariella Frostrup (no idea about spelling).
