Which do you prefer?

I like them both; I would consider which goes better with your surname, or is it six-and-two-threes? Our dd is quite clumsy and I think that might make Grace a bit of a risk?

MrsShrek3 · 23/07/2012 00:04

I like both (Grace is dd's middle name) as others say see what goes with your surname. If you want your dd to be the only one with her name, go for Florence imho, a few Graces around. Or wait til you meet her :)

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 23/07/2012 00:15

I really like both. I'd see which goes best with surname/sibling names/middle name etc. I don't like any of the nn for Florence though, so if she'll end up as Flo of Flossie or something then I'd pick Grace.

tammytoby · 23/07/2012 06:53

Grace has been THE most popular name for a few years if I remember correctly. Do there will be lots of them around already.

Florence is becoming more trendy and the Cameron's have one.

tammytoby · 23/07/2012 06:53

Sorry so not do

MammaTonic · 23/07/2012 07:12

Grace

emmyloo2 · 23/07/2012 07:16

I like them both a lot and Grace has always been a favourite. However, it's popularity puts me off it. Florence is less popular but becoming more popular.

If popularity doesn't bother you then Grace for sure.

exoticfruits · 23/07/2012 07:30

Both nice.

DontmindifIdo · 23/07/2012 07:33

Both lovely, however I've met a lot of little Florence's and grace seems to be more popular as a middle name, so not many little girls actually call grace around. Florence is more likely to be clearly a child born around now as its quite popular, whereas grace seems a bit more timeless.

zxcv123 · 23/07/2012 11:22

Both Florence and Grace are relatively popular round here. Probably know about 8 Graces of various ages and every single one of them, without fail, definitely does not live up to their name. Half of them are dumpy, clumsy children. The others are right little madams with blonde/ginger ringlets and a habit of stamping their feet whenever they don't get their way. I probably wouldn't notice it, but for the fact of their name making me expect dainty, well-mannered children and being surprised that they are not.

I know a Florence who gets called Fliss for short, which I think is nice.

LiteraryMermaid · 23/07/2012 11:26

Both nice, but very popular - Florence possibly still slightly less so, but is very trendy at the moment. Would probably pick Florence, just because I've come across fewer of those.

shimmy0 · 23/07/2012 11:36

Grace is the best as Florence may get Flo and it just reminds me of the old way of saying your period has come "Aunt Flo".

tammytoby · 23/07/2012 15:48

Floss as in dental floss [surprised]? Not sure that is very attractive, sorry.

SoSoMamanBebe · 23/07/2012 16:10

Florence! Lovely name. Grace is sweet but better for a middle name.

squoosh · 23/07/2012 18:00

Grace, by a country mile.

Happilymarried155 · 23/07/2012 18:46

Florence x

pictish · 23/07/2012 18:47

Neither - they are both overused.

SweetPea3 · 23/07/2012 18:56

Re popularity, I think it depends where you live. My friend who lives in Fulham (SW London - middle-middle to upper-middle class) tells me that there are lots of little Florence's running round at the moment, whereas I don't think Grace is so popular. What I've just said is probably neither here nor there, but I always think it's quite interesting to hear how popular certain names are amongst particular demographics, rather than just looking at the overall national stats.

Both lovely names btw!

happy2bhomely · 23/07/2012 19:14

I have a Grace (almost 9) She is neither dumpy or a little madam! Hmm Her name suits her perfectly. I was unsure of it when she was born because she was huge with a mop of dark hair and a squished nose! (She is now a sun kissed blonde with an angelic face) She is the only one in her large primary.

I love it and more importantly, she loves it.

Gugglebum · 23/07/2012 19:36

I know oh-so-many Graces. It's lovely name, but a bit over-used, imo. Florence would get my vote as long as she is not called Flo. The only one I know occasionally goes by Flory, which I like so much more than Flo.

bigbluebump · 23/07/2012 22:23

I'd say neither - Grace has been THE most popular girls' name and Florence is becoming increasingly trendy.

I think there are far nicer, more interesting and less overused names around.

shimmy0 · 23/07/2012 23:25

Why is it important to know if someone is middle middle class or upper middle class?

pictish · 23/07/2012 23:26

I think both are beautiful names, it's worth adding...but they are increasing and swelling. That's all.

Ham69 · 24/07/2012 00:14

zxcv123 - have you got children? I'm lost for words after reading your post.

chickydoo · 24/07/2012 00:18

Florence pretty common in SW London. We know at least 6!
Grace is also popular, I like Graice though.
Both names are Ok but I prefer Grace
