Is Bertie too posh?!

We would put Albert on birth certificate but Bertie as nn. I mentioned it to a friend the other day and she genuinely thought I was joking. She said he would get beaten up in the playground. Maybe we're getting desperate....!

We were pretty stable on Gordie for a while (Gordon on certificate) but everyone thought that was a terrible idea. I thought of it because it was my grandfather's name and DH likes it but maybe it is a bit ugly. Ahhhh this is so difficult. From my last post it seems like Freddie and George are popular. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Well I meant not too posh in my opinion, I definitely am not posh Grin

Oh goodness, my DH is Gordon and I've only ever called him by his surname, which he has always used, unless I'm with his family. I'm not sure it's due a revival yet, though I know there are worse names. I just can't envisage a baby with that name.
I don't mind Bertie or Albert.

I like Bertie. I don't think it's posh. I've taught one too and I definately do not teach in a wealthy area!

It's already been said but great post mini

Aaagh typo Definitely obviously! Pregnancy exhaustion clearly kicking in!

Bertie was lovely btw

Asked my Eton-educated hubs (I don't count as I'm American) and yes, it's too posh.

WowOoo · 23/07/2012 19:28

What is wrong with Gordon?
I think it's lush.
I knew a Bert and he was far from posh. Others called him Albie also. Not massively keen on it actaully.
George is a classic name. I wanted it for DS but friend beat me to it!
Freddie nice, bit common now, but it's an OK name.

I love Bertie had dd3 been a boy she would have been Bertram with the nn Bertie FAB name go for it.

bigbluebump · 23/07/2012 21:38

I don't think Bertie is too 'posh' at all (but then I seem to love 'posh' names!), but I find it a little comical. Perhaps because of the Bert part.... but I'm also not a fan of cutesy names (Alfie, Archie, Bertie, Albie etc).

I much prefer Gordon or Bertram - they're good solid names that won't sound dated and will serve your son well throughout his life.

Another vote for Minimonty's great post - absolutely agree!! Love the names suggested too!

Named DS1 when still a bump. Not a common name at the time. Year after birth, great grandma sent paper clipping saying now most.....popular name in Britain!!
DS2 also named as bump. Again not common... Now the kids I teach are telling me it's the name of a very popular Sky forensice photographer/serial killer!
My advice - go with what you love. Your little 'un will make it their own and to hell with the rest!
That said - will watch DS2 around the knives from now on....
