Reggie?

am expecting ds2 in december and im really struggling to pick the 'right' name for him.

was going to use Reggie as a middle name cos it was my grandads name (and my dads sort of nickname) but its really kinda grown on me, ive still got one or two reservations about it but i know my dad would love it if i used it as his first name.

my problems with it are:-

i dont like the name shortened, would annoy me if people called him reg.

my ds1 is robbie, people will take the mick of the 'kray' likeness, but that has got a charm to it aswell!

i wouldnt have a clue what to middle name him, quite like the sound of Reggie Oscar Parkes, but would just be picking a name at random really!

what are your thoughts...........

The Kray twins link would be charming?

Reggie is ok, but it doesn't feel like a birth cert name to me. It's a wheeler dealer name.

Stellan · 20/07/2012 12:34

I think most young people will think of the chart show DJ/The Voice presenter rather than the Kray twins but certainly parents will think of Reggie Kray.

Reggie is a nickname in itself so surely people won't call him Reg. My name is Charlotte and while I haven't got a nickname, I am called 'Charl' sometimes in conversation. I would never be referred to as 'Charl' if someone was talking about me but sometimes it's used to refer to me or get my attention (as in, 'Charl, can you put the kettle on?' but no one would ring me up and ask my DP, 'Can I speak to Charl?'). I imagine that's what will happen with Reggie/Reg too.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 20/07/2012 12:37

I like the name, i don't think it's a biggie with the krays. It will be similar tho with robbie & reggie!

squoosh · 20/07/2012 12:37

Ooh I really fancy Reggie Yates!

redrubyshoes · 20/07/2012 12:38

Robbie and Reggie? Sounds more like kitten's names.

Sorry I am really not sure and yes I thought of The Kray twins as well.

shimmy0 · 20/07/2012 12:39

I wouldn't have made a connection with the kray twin thing as your son isn't called Ronnie.
Your dad would love him to have Reggie as a first name, but what would your son like later on in life? Would he like to have his own name perhaps?
Sorry as other posters will have spotted I am anti let's name him after grandad because grandad will be chuffed.

Robbie and Reggie are too similar sorry.

juliewoojulie · 20/07/2012 12:44

charming in the sense, that they sound like 'brothers'. that's quite important to me, dont see the point of naming a second boy something totally different, i think that would sound odd!

Reggie was on my grandad's bc, so its a full enough name for me.

squoosh · 20/07/2012 13:12

Fair enough.

Bunbaker · 20/07/2012 13:31

"people will take the mick of the 'kray' likeness, but that has got a charm to it aswell!"

There is nothing charming about the Kray twins. They were vicious thugs.

And I don't "get" why names have to go together like a double act - Robbie and Reggie sound like a comedy act.

Bunbaker · 20/07/2012 13:32

Sorry. I didn't mean to sound so rude.

sonniboo · 20/07/2012 13:53

Robbie and Reggie is far too similar, it would be comical, sorry.

I'm not keen on Reginald (or nicknames Reg or Reggie) at all, I'm afraid. Robert is much nicer!

rachel234 · 20/07/2012 14:35

I'm not keen on Reg/Reggie (or the full name Reginald), sorry. I agree about Robbie and Reggie being too similar too.

juliewoojulie · 20/07/2012 14:37

i never said the kray twins were charming, i said the names i was thinking about had a charm about them!

i get that people think the names are too similar, but i'd find it weird if i named a second son something like Tarquin, it just doesnt sound like they were named by the same person, i think its important to sound like brothers or am i over-thinking it?

what would other people put with robbie? i like toby, olly and billy too, or are they to samey too?

OP posts:
rachel234 · 20/07/2012 14:51

But names don't have to 'match' do they? I would think Robbie and Tarquin or Robbie and Callum sound nicer than Robbie & Reggie or Robbie & Olly for example.

Is Robbie's full name Robert?

sonniboo · 20/07/2012 14:56

No, names don't need to match and I too find Robbie & Billy/Olly/Reggie/Toby too similar. But then I'm not keen on cutesy names for boys anyway.

How about
Robbie & Theo
Robbie & Quinn
Robbie & Dominic

sonniboo · 20/07/2012 14:56

And I don't find Reggie particularly charming, sorry.

Bunbaker · 20/07/2012 15:35

Sorry julie I misunderstood your post about being charming. Names are very much a personal thing and I doubt you will ever find a name that gets a unanimous thumbs up on MN. I agree with Rachel that names don't have to "match", but that is just a personal view.

Dogsmom · 20/07/2012 16:06

How about Oscar Reggie instead of Reggie Oscar?

People will almost certainly shorten it to Reg.

squoosh · 20/07/2012 16:08

I do actually know a baby Reggie and he is a boisterous little cutie.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 20/07/2012 16:25

The only name I find too similar to robbie is reggie, Toby olly etc are different enough they just end in a y sound.

Lannie33 · 20/07/2012 20:05

Reggie is not my cup a tea, but I get the family tradition thing...personally I would use it as a middle rather than a first name, especially if Reg will really bother you since you have no control over what kids will call him in the schoolyard.

Badgerina · 21/07/2012 10:11

Robbie and Reggie? No.

LetsKateWin · 21/07/2012 10:18

I thought of the Krays before I'd opened the thread. Definitely not a name I would choose.
