If you are in Scotland, how is the name Mirren regarded?

Just that really! I don't live in Scotland any more, but still want Scottish names for my DCs.
TIA!

WillowTheWitch · 18/07/2012 22:08

I know of a wee mirrin just born . I think it's lovely .

JennyPiccolo · 18/07/2012 22:09

I think it's lovely, fairly well regarded as well.

ellangirl · 18/07/2012 22:09

Wasn't it murron in braveheart?

Don't know hardly any.. Just recently encounted a Murrin though. Quite pretty ( and the baby isgorgeous).

SandyBottoms · 18/07/2012 22:19

I'm in NE and know of a Murren.
Not really my cup of tea but it's not horrible.

tittytittyhanghang · 18/07/2012 22:22

Don't know any neither, but i think its sounds quite a lovely name, id probably pronounce it mi -rin, which is probably a bit harsh sounding. Makes me think of Helen Mirron tbh.

fireice · 18/07/2012 22:23

I dont know any, I dont think it would be seen as odd though.

K999 · 18/07/2012 22:23

I'm in Scotland and it just reminds me of the football team St Mirren

suzikettles · 18/07/2012 22:30

I would think of St Mirren, patron saint of Paisley (and a man), and obv the football team as well.

Are you thinking of the name Muireann? I think that would be more anglicised to Murrin rather than Mirren.

amck5700 · 18/07/2012 22:35

I'm in Scotland too - i think it is a lovely name, but my gut feel is that depending on the area in Scotland, it may sound a bit schemey - sorry if that offends anyone.

Lorna is a bit more of a classic and there is Isla, Kirsten, or Ailsa. Or how about Nairne or Tierney if you want something more unusual.

wheniwasoneihadjustbegun · 18/07/2012 22:38

Would think it was a corruption of Muireann, to be honest. Which I don't personally like all that much - I think there are prettier similar style names. Morven?

Yama · 18/07/2012 22:39

It's alright. Prefer Morven.

Champagneforlunch · 18/07/2012 22:56

Mirren makes me think of the football team, but as my dad is a supporter it isn't really a surprise. Dd3 is Maren which he likes because it is nearly Mirren.

ellangirl · 19/07/2012 14:49

Thank you everyone. I wasn't feeling sure about it, and I think I'm decided against it now. It's hard to get a feel for a name in a place where you're not living, but as we may live in Scotland again one day it's important! Plus, i have now found out that a word that sounds very similar mean the flu/plague where I live now Grin
Any more alternatives that I might like would be very welcome!

still on a scottish theme ellangirl?

amck5700 · 19/07/2012 14:59

Ainsley, Greer, Elspeth, Blaire

ellangirl · 19/07/2012 15:00

Yes Scottish, or celtic at least but would prefer to stay away from difficult Gaelic spellings. I usually prefer strong sounding girls names.

ellangirl · 19/07/2012 15:01

I love Greer actually, but it's too close in sound to our surname. Boys names incidentally are looking like Gregor or possibly Duncan. We have a Fraser already.

amck5700 · 19/07/2012 15:04

I love Gregor is was in the final 2 for my eldest and he ended up Craig which I like too but I sometimes wish I'd chosen Gregor instead. 2nd son is Ciar (Keir) our girls names were Kirsty or Mairi - they dont date and are strong girls names. I don't mind Duncan either, but i prefer gregor :)

amck5700 · 19/07/2012 15:08

I knew two sisters called Logan and Nairne, also knew a girl called Moray (Murray). Rowan is nice too but my other half didn't like it.

Clarabumps · 19/07/2012 21:55

A bit schemey in this neck of the woods...

DottyandSpottyWot · 20/07/2012 10:00

Schemey in this part of Scotland too!

What about Eilidh, Isla, Iona, Catriona?

Leopardprintpjs · 20/07/2012 17:57

Mirren is a really old family name for me. My grans gran (my great great gran??) was nn Mirren, her Sunday name was Marion which I like but it's really old fashioned.
