Middle name to go with full first name or shortened version?

Am currently pregnant and if this one turns out to be a boy, we are planning on naming him Montgomery, to be known as Monty (I am not seeking on opinions on this name by the way, and I know that some will not like it).

My question is, do I choose a middle name to go with Montgomery or with Monty? I guess if he's never going to be called Montgomery then the middle name should go with Monty, but then again middle names aren't really used in day to day life are they?

For those that have a child with a 'birth certificate name' and a 'known by name', what did you do?

I think it should be possible to find a middle name which goes nicely with both Montgomery and Monty.

Montgomery Alexander
Monty Alexander

Montgomery George
Monty George

Montgomery Charles
Monty Charles

sound fine to me :)

Our DS's middle name doesn't really go with his nickname (both end in y so sounds a bit odd) but couldn't really think of a situation where nickname and middle name would be used?

Thanks both. I hadn't actually considered that a middle name could go with both, but I really like Monty/Montgomery Charles. Thanks!

Most names will go with Montgomery and Monty, surely?

Babies announced in the Telegraph:
Montgomery Henry Rafael
Montgomery Evan Innes-Ker
Montgomery Nate
Montgomery Edward Denning
Montgomery Timothy Charter
Montgomery Patrick Seagroatt
Montgomery Thomas Trowbridge
Montgomery William
Montgomery John Francis
Montgomery Anthony Hector
Montgomery James Collins
Montgomery John Arnold
Montgomery Henry
Montgomery James Bryce
Montgomery Joseph Playfair
Montgomery Charles Alister
Montgomery Alexander
Montgomery Albert
Montgomery Charles Douglas
Montgomery George Alexander

Those are not the children's surnames (nor one parent's surname as a middle name) but their middle names - looks like you need to stick a family surname in there too if you have a Montgomery!

Nearly all of the announcements state 'to be known as Monty' in the announcement. However, most of the middle names would have worked with Monty.

Unless you are wanting to call your son Monty Tom (Montgomery Thomas) or something of that ilk, I can't see it mattering much. They are hardly completely different names, are they?

Maybe not Montgomery Jonathan (Monty Jonty!)
