..I get the final say on DC2's first name (dancing on the coffee table :o ) while DH will choose the middle name from a duly approved list I am supposed to give him.

And this is where I need some ideas! I am looking for artsy or unusual middle names for a boy or a girl, if possible with a connection to Scotland and not ending in "ia" or "a" for the girl names.

So far I have:
Sibylle or Sibyl
Zelie
Berenice
Blair
Albane

Andrew
Ezra
Ivan or Ivo
Alan or Allen

Do you have other ideas?

First name for a girl will probably be Antonia (alternative choice: Octavia) and for a boy, it will be a tie between Gabriel and Barthelemy.
Second middle name will either be Martha or Maurice.

Ds is Blair, I'm guessing you are thinking Blair for a girl? bloody Americans switching sexes :o

Edith
Isobel
Elsie
Mara (I know ends in a but means the ocean in Gaelic and I love it)

Struan
Fergus
Fraser
Murdo
Ruiridh
Innes

squoosh · 17/07/2012 17:54

How did Alan wangle it's way onto that fancy pants list?

Ham69 · 17/07/2012 17:57

I'd possibly avoid Antonia Blair!!

squoosh · 17/07/2012 18:01

Should it not by Sybil/Sybille?

squoosh · 17/07/2012 18:03

Ah I Just googled and apparently both spellings are correct.

I quite like Sybil/Sybille if I put Prunella Scales out of my mind.

Now Prunella, there's a name due a come back!!

MagdalenaAlec · 17/07/2012 18:29

thanks Glaikit! I am adding Elsie, Fraser and Innes to the list (I also love Edith but it sounds weird with Martha)

squoosh: it will be Sibylle (French) or Sybil (shame on me I misspelt it)
Alan is after a relative.. :o

Girls: Tierney, Kirsten, Mairi, Rowan
Boys: Craig, Gregor, Cairn, Ross, Nairn, Logan

MagdalenaAlec · 18/07/2012 10:46

Ham69: Why would you avoid Antonia Blair???

My apologies Glaikit... I have to tell you though that I have never heard of Blair for a boy in the US. I like the fact it sounds "strong" - very good choice!
Mara is nice too but it does not work with Martha (Mar-Mar...)

OP posts:
squoosh · 18/07/2012 10:57

Antonia Blair in Britain would be Georgina Bush in America.

Glaikit · 18/07/2012 10:57

I'm in Scotland, and it's used more for boys here, 83 boys in 2010 4 girls, but still isn't über popular.

Blair underwood is the only American I can think of. Is it gossip girl that has a female Blair?

Martha would be my dream girls name, but it rhymes with our surname so it's out. I just need to convince dh about Mara and it will be on the list if dc2 ever comes along!

squoosh · 18/07/2012 10:59

I think of Blair as boys name.

The Americans have even turned Rory into a girls name!

MagdalenaAlec · 18/07/2012 11:37

Yes there is a Blair in Gossip Girl, hence why it is more and more popular in NY (you may hit me now, as a member of the "Wonderful names downgraders cast", aka TV series producers and writers :o). There is also a Miss USA, if I recall correctly.

Rory is now unisex here, because it is often short for Aurora.

Any other artsy names in mind? DH is waiting of his list like it were a Xmas present and my very creative DS is trying to help me by suggesting Tofu and Scrat (Ice Age fan).
MAYDAY!!!

Glaikit · 18/07/2012 12:03

When you say artsy,do you mean in meaning or in relationship?

Scottish artists
Charles Rennie mackintosh (I'm sure there's more, but I can't think off hand)

I know of a guy called Gair, which I always thought was nice. It means little one.

Glaikit · 18/07/2012 12:04

Ruiridh (roo-ree) is lovely too and takes it away from the boy/girl Rory

squoosh · 18/07/2012 12:08

Ruairidh gives me the creeps with that pronunciation. Don't know why.

MagdalenaAlec · 18/07/2012 12:21

By "artsy" I mean a name that "sounds"/looks a little artistic, hippie, indie, something that DH will probably look for in the list (something along the lines of India, Luna, Clovis, Cesar... which I have already vetoed).

Ruiridh sounds nice but I am not sure half of the people he will meet will be able to read his name, which would be pretty harsh on him I decide to give him Barthelemy as a first name (Barthelemy Ruiridh Maurice... "what??").

Many thanks for your help

Keir is a lovely Scottish name (it's a boy's name in the UK but you could probably use it for either).

Douglas is good and Scottish.

Fife/Fyfe seems to be used as a name now.

Any good?

Glaikit · 18/07/2012 12:43

Alba -girl, means Scotland In Gaelic
Clova, Scottish glen
Brae, hill, slope

Do you want more Scottish or just something different?

MagdalenaAlec · 18/07/2012 15:36

How do you pronounce Keir? It looks nice!
Fife would be really cool too since DH and I met at St Andrews.

Alba has been on my list for a very long time but I think of it as a girl name and it will make too many "a" with a first name ending in "ia" and a second middle name in "a". This is why I went for the French version Albane.

Clova and Brae are nice too.

All other suggestions welcome, whether "Scotland-related" or not! (Thank you so much, I am discovering many potential middle names here)

OP posts:
Glaikit · 18/07/2012 16:22

Keir rhymes with here. Or you could have Kerr to rhyme with her.

I'm sticking with Scottish! If st Andrews has significance then how about:
Tay - river
Eden - another river

Lunan - small town in Angus
cullen - small town in Aberdeenshire, if you can get past the twilight reference
Nairn
Corrie
Ness
Dee
Don
Spey
Clyde
Katrine -loch pr kat-ryn rhymes with bin

I'll have a think and come back with more.

amck5700 · 18/07/2012 16:25

I have a Ciar pronounced the same as Keir but is the Gaelic spelling :)

Thinkingof4 · 19/07/2012 13:28

How about Afton for a girl- river in ayrshire which Robert burns wrote about (sweet Afton water on something like that - I'm sure someone will correct me if wrong!)

squoosh · 19/07/2012 13:31

Isn't Afton a brand of tobacco?

squoosh · 19/07/2012 13:33

The cigarettes are Sweet Afton after the Robbie Burns poem, not sure they're around anymore though.
