Wilfred/Wilf

I like classic, older style names, and Wilf is really growing on me. Seems to me to be in a similar vein to Alfie/Archie (which I also really like) etc but perhaps not so overused? Views?

I think it's a nice choice. Wilfred is a strong-sounding, masculine, classic first name; Wilf is a very sweet, romantic nickname; and if he just wants to blend in with the crowd, he can call himself Wil, a sort of every man's name.

I don't see Wilfred as being in the same vein as Archie and Alfie. Wilfred is substantial, not cutesy. I'd say similar names to Wilfred are Archibald, Alfred, Stanley, Reginald, Winston, Arthur, Benedict, Cecil, Charles, Henry, Edwin, Ernest, etc.

I do think Wilfred is an up-and-coming sort of name due to its similarity to William and the fact it offers both Wil and Freddie as possible nicknames.

Thanks Stellan. I only made the connection with Archie/Alfie as I'm the sort of person that would have Archibald/Alfred/Wilfred on the birth certificate, but would happily shorten day to day. Agree Wilfred is a good substantial name, and adore Wilf as the short form, but as you say, there are lots of options for him, i.e. Fred, Freddie, Wil. Growing on me even more I have to say!

I think it's lovely; I can see it suiting a baby/boy/man. Its much stronger than names like Archie, with a stronger sound. I can only echo Stellan's words, really :)

Go for it!

I like it but it sounds somewhat stern to me? But certainly better than Alfie, Archie etc

anicecuppatea · 17/07/2012 15:21

Thanks MammaT! Agree it's a name that will grow up with the little man which I think is important.

It sounds very weedy to me. Not a strong name at all.

tiddleypompom · 17/07/2012 16:29

I think it's a great name - lots of nn choices (Will, Wilf, Freddie) too. Ours is 9 months old, and on the whole people are very positive about it (though you'd have to be pretty rude to express dislike when faced with the child I guess).

I've never been too worried by occasional pastings on here either - IMO the best names prompt debate :)

Love it!

winkle2 · 17/07/2012 19:03

Hate it. Sorry.

FriskyMare · 17/07/2012 19:06

My dear old dad was a Wilf - IMO its an old man's name. Sorry.

anicecuppatea · 17/07/2012 19:41

To be honest the old man thing is one of the reasons I like it! I lean towards these sorts of names rather than really modern ones which just aren't me at all. I must just be an old fashioned creature at heart... Wink

I like Fred or Will as a nn but not Wilf.
