Sam for a girl?

OH really likes Sam for a girl. He doesn't like any longer version. Whilst I like it and also don't like any longer versions I'm not convince that it is 'enough' of a name for a girl. Think everyone will always assume she's a boy. Opinions?

Sam is a cute NN for a girl, but I think that a longer form is needed. It might irritate Miss. Sam Surname if she is often mistaken for Master. Sam Surname.

You could call her Sambuca :)
I think Sam on its own is fine.

I agree with you, OP. I think she might need more of a name. There is a baby name site somewhere that you can search for names that contain certain letters etc, so by putting Sam in there, you may get a few alternatives to Samantha to give more choice / options.

Wish I could remember the name of that site....

Sam is a nice name. But does it go with your surname?

PollyIndia · 16/07/2012 15:14

Someone said to me this weekend that if you like a nickname, better to give the baby the full version then use the abbreviation then they can choose to go long or short when older and at work etc. I thought there was some sense in that.
I know a girl called Samia so as others have said, Samantha not the only Sam option. And you can always call her Sam her whole life!

VolAuVent · 16/07/2012 15:41

I don't think Sam on its own is enough, and yes it is unisex.

How about Sarah, Sadie, Seren, Susie, Sylvie/a?

badtime · 16/07/2012 15:45

Something like Samara or Samia can be nice, if it is just 'Samantha' that is the problem.

I agree that if the name is just 'Sam' people will assume it belongs to a boy.

Emphaticmaybe · 16/07/2012 15:46

Samara is quite nice, or just Sam with a longer, feminine middle name.

On paper, I'd assume Sam was male. Upon learning Sam - not Samantha or Samara - was a female, my next thought would be, 'Her parents must have really wanted a son.' Sam may be a unisex nickname but it is a male given name. The problem with most so-called unisex names is that they are not, in fact, unisex - they tend to be used for one sex more than the other. To me, picking a name that is used more commonly for boys than girls for a daughter suggests that somehow it's not OK to be a little girl and identified as such by your name. There are plenty of strong girls' names around; there's no need to venture into the boys' domain.

How about...?
Samantha nn Sam
Samar(a) nn Sam
Sameera or Samira nn Sam
Samiya nn Sam

These are all clearly feminine choices that lend themselves to Sam as a nickname.

darkfever · 16/07/2012 19:20

I'd assume that Sam on it's own is a boy's name.

bigbluebump · 16/07/2012 22:11

I know quite a few female Sams - yes, some of them have longer official names (Samantha, Samara, Sameera etc), but to me they are just 'Sam' and I don't think of a boy/man when I think of them.

There are lots of unisex names e.g. Alex, Morgan or Jamie. No problem imo.

WetAugust · 16/07/2012 22:28

Don't. You'll condem her to a life of letters addressed to 'Mr Sam 3bees'. That's unkind.

manicinsomniac · 16/07/2012 22:30

In the Chalet School there is a 'Samaris' (Two Sams at the Chalet School) - Samaris and Samantha. I like both. Also Samara and, secretly and shamefully, Sambuca.

I wouldn't christen Sam.

Thanks for replies. We really don't like any longer versions. I don't mind it being a nn just put off by it being more common for a boy these days. Think we will use it for her middle name.
