What was your inspiration for choosing a middle name?

DH and I have decided on first name for DS2 due in a few weeks (Luke). Middle name for DS1 was after DH's brother.

We can't seem to be able to decide on a middle name for DS2 -all remaining male names in our family aren't appealing to the point where we can agree. We do feel that the middle name should have meaning and not just be a name we like.

Any suggestions -very interested to know how others decided on middle names for their DC's.

We chose first names we liked then middle names were my dads name, then DS2 was partners dads name, and DS3 was partners name. All have my surname as middle name too Smile

My sisters and I have our grandmothers names as middle names, which I love. I wanted to do this for our DDs, but DH was worried that the one whose name wasn't used initially would be hurt if the second DC was a boy.

Their first names are names we like but don't have particular meaning. Their second names we chose because of their special meaning. DD1s is Sophia- wisdom, DD2s is Hannah- God's favour.

DS1 - My late cousin, and my brother (who died when DS1 was 2.5)
DS2 - DH's younger brother
DS3 - DH's older brother, which was also my brothers middle name
DS4 - My uncle, DH's sister and my mum's middle name! One name, Jack, short for Jacqueline in DH's sis and my mums case!
DS5 - A name I liked but not enough to use as a first name. Also a name from the same book that DS5's first name came from.

My Dad started us with alphebetised middle names, there are 5 of us, A-E. I carried on and have F&G and now looking for H names. I've used common names as they have more unusual first names, just in case they prefer it.

Thank you so much everyone! You have given me something to think about.

Jamjaq that is great that you are carrying on the tradition!

The boys have names that were similar to their first names and sounded nice together. DD has a mouthful of names, she is our last child and well there were many names that we (I) liked for her, so we (I) gave her two middle names to use some of them up.

DS's middle name is Spencer after my DB who was at the end of aggressive chemo when DS was born last September. Sadly DB lost his battle to cancer last month at 28 so it is even more poignant.
For any future DC's, I would use my sister's middle name for a girl, and perhaps my maiden name (old fashioned boys name, v popular now) for a boy.

Family names for both ds1 and ds2. Ds1 got my deceased father's name and there was never, ever going to be any alternative, and ds2 got my husband's father's name, again we wouldn't have shosen anything else. Their names honour their history and ancestry.

DS - my brother, who died.

DD - just a name we both liked, that went well with her first name. Coincidentally it is also the name of a singer we like, who is now DS's favourite artist Grin

If we have a boy his middle names will be Nathan (short for DHs middle name and FILs name, Nathanial) and Angus (after my late Grandad and the area of Scotland we lived in for a year before conceiving).

We're completely stuck on a girls first name, but if we choose something beginning with L then DH wants Claire (an acronym of all the 'important women' in his life - sisters, mother, wife, daughter...)

I like Kayla as a girls middle name too as my mum's name is Kay and I'm Isla and Kayla is a strong ulster-scots name.

DS1 has the Welsh form of my dad's middle name (as I couldn't find a nice Welsh variant of his first name!)

DC2 will have my FIL's name, again in it's Welsh form - luckily this time there's plenty of choice (Welsh has quite a few variants of "John"!). Should the expected "he" suddenly appear as a "she" then I expect we'll do something similar with the female family names, after they've picked us up off the floor with shock!

Thanks so much! Bubs arrived (unexpectedly!) tonight and we settled on a middle name after his great-grandfather! Your input was so helpful.
