Should peoples opinions put me off this name?

Im 27 weeks pregnant with first child. I once met a small child called "Devon" she is female. And the name really stuck in my head.

When i got pregnant, if the baby was a girl Devon was one of my choices.

At 20week scan found out we were having a girl.

However nobody in the family likes the name Devon. My mother hates it, and mother in law does.

My side of the family have mentioned that its not really an appropriate name.
One of them said thats a place not a name! Everybody has said they havent heard a child called that before (i have only heard of it once).

Now i ve been wondering whether to use the name Devon or not, i think peoples reactions have sort of put me off it.

Mentioned this to DH who said "you cant change her name now!" lol

I agree with Narked - how about Amelie. It's completely gorgeous!

LittleSugaPlum · 16/07/2012 19:39

Please choose Devon! DS2 would have been Devon but we live in Devon so it would have been weird!

peachypips · 16/07/2012 19:49

Oh - and don't let people tell you what to do! If you want it, have it! It's not like it's so strange people will comment.

littlemissbroody26 · 16/07/2012 19:50

please dont choose Amy, my name is Amy and its a rubish name! I feel like my mother put no imagination into my name (it was the 80's and every 3rd girl was called Amy.)

Amelie is a much prettier name :)

TouTou · 16/07/2012 19:57

It's almost the same but a bit more Ah at the beginning.
Ah-meh-lee.

Soooooo beautiful. And it means that you don't have the problem with the 'Leigh' part clashing with half-sis (which would be really, really, odd.)

TouTou · 16/07/2012 19:58

Nope just thought of that - it's not Ah. It's more like A-melly.

TouTou · 16/07/2012 19:59

Damnit - Aa-melly. (Like a high Ah rather than a low Ah like you'd say to show your tonsils off to the doctor)

LittleSugaPlum · 16/07/2012 20:05

hmmm dont think im keen on that to be honest

I know of a 15yr old girl called Devon.

RuthlessBaggage · 16/07/2012 20:46

At the risk of stating the obvious, if it is pronounced Amy-Lee then why not use that spelling? If people have to ask you how to pronounce it now, then she will get asked it all her life. Which is annoying.

Don't tell me that Aimeeeiie-Leigh is subtly different from Amy-Lee. Names are used out loud at least as much as they are used written down (if not more). If it sounds the same, it is the same.

I know lots of Devons, but I'm American. :) We don't think of it as being a place.

I think Devon Elizabeth is pretty and if you like it, go for it.

sashh · 17/07/2012 04:46

I've only heard it used by Americans, and I think for a boy, But then Americans call girls Shuan.

I like it.

persephoneplum · 17/07/2012 12:38

In Australia, devon is the cheapest, nastiest processed sandwich meat. Seriously, I reckon they scrape this stuff off the abattoir floor, mix with breadcrumbs and shape into a roll.

No way in hell would anyone here use the name, although I have met some boy Devins. Dreadful.

trilottie · 17/07/2012 13:59

I like Devon, and I'm not usually a fan of weird names. In fact, I don't think it is that weird at all. There is a model called Devon which was the first thing I thought of: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devon_Aoki

princessbonnie · 17/07/2012 15:22

hi

what a lovely name
dont let no one put you off the name its your baby & if you change your mind & call her something else what you dont want you wont be happy
xx

BunnyLebowski · 17/07/2012 15:30

Devon is quite pretty. I like it. Do it.

If only to spare the poor mite one of the other names on your list which are, quite frankly, horrendous. Sorry OP Grin

Incaminka · 17/07/2012 15:34

Devon Elisabeth is a lovely name.
Just to point out that if it is the sound you like, rather than any significance to place, Dervil is an Irish girl's name that has a similar sound. :-)

TouTou · 17/07/2012 15:36

I do agree with Bunny. Devon is definitely a hundred times nicer and more classy than the names on the list.

Apart from my objections to not using a placename unless you've been there (which would mean a thousand India's would have a problem!) I think it's quite pretty, especially with Elizabeth as a second name.

Use it, and don't worry about what people say. I have 2 DCs with Hmm names and people have got used to them. Even my MIL. Grin

BunnyLebowski · 17/07/2012 15:37

Do you mean Dearbhla Incaminka?

I've never heard of Dervil and I'm Irish Grin.

Pudgy2011 · 17/07/2012 16:38

Devon is lovely for a girl, but I'm probably a skewed that way - I want Dylan for a girl!

barbie1 · 17/07/2012 16:41

Dd is a Devon and we have only had positive responses, well to our faces at least Hmm Grin
