Too old-fashioned?

Feeling really upset... wanted to call my baby Penny if it's a girl, after my favourite nan who passed away right before I met my hubby. She was an amazing woman who raised me for the first five years of my life, and she meant the world to me. I love the name, especially on a cute little girl, but when I mentioned potential names a while back (before I was preggers) to my friends, more than one of them pulled a face and said that they hoped for the baby's sake I went with one of the other options...

What do you think? Should I just go with my gut feeling that I love the name Penny, or should I listen to my friends and think of some more options? Is it really too old-fashioned to be given to a little baby?

The only Penny that I know is 16, so I see no problem with it! Go for it, you love it, it's a lovely name and, most importantly, you sound like you'd regret it if you didn't use it.

Nancy66 · 13/07/2012 18:24

It's a sweet name and really means something to you so don't listen to your friends.

Will it be Penelope and Penny for short?

This is where the first rule of baby naming comes into play

Rule 1 of Baby Naming - NEVER discuss baby names with ANYONE except your OH before you deliver

Rule 2 of Baby Naming - choose a name your and your DH want and love

Rule 3 of Baby Naming - see rule 1.

Penny is lovely. Would she be Penelope? I know a child Penny & she is very sweet. Have you seen 'The big bang theory'? The main girl is called Penny.

Frikadellen · 13/07/2012 18:26

Penny is lovely go for it. Makes it even lovelier when it is named after someone you loved.

I think you should go with it. It's not my favourite name, but it's not in the tiniest bit weird, too old- fashioned, whatever. And you have a very compelling reason to use it, which is lovely (I would call the daughter I now won't have Constance, after my Nan).

BTW, never tell people apart from us, your name choices Wink

BillyBollyBandy · 13/07/2012 18:27

Love Penelope and Penny as a nn

DottieRose · 13/07/2012 18:46

Penny is gorgeous.....you will never ever please everyone....ever! Stuff your friend!

VolAuVent · 13/07/2012 18:48

It's a lovely name - go for it :)

freerangelady · 13/07/2012 18:50

I have a cousin penny in her 20's. Love the name and as its so personal to you I think it's great.

tellyaddict · 13/07/2012 18:51

Another one who thinks that it is a lovely name and all the lovelier for having a special meaning. It's not at all old fashioned and even if it was alot of the'old' names are coming back. I know a 2 yr old Penelope and it suits her

stressheaderic · 13/07/2012 18:53

I think it is an absolutely lovely name and even nicer than it has a special significance.

meditrina · 13/07/2012 18:54

I think it's a lovely name, and don't see it as an old fashioned one.

I'd probably put Penelope on the BC, and use Penny day to day.

PandaNot · 13/07/2012 18:54

Choose a name you like. Personally I wouldn't choose Penny because it's my mil's name but that's just me!

AThingInYourLife · 13/07/2012 18:58

It wouldn't be my choice (though I quite like Penelope), but you love it and it's not weird or objectionable in any way.

You should use it.

And remember the first rule of Baby Name Club: don't talk about baby names you might use outside Baby Name Club :o

Born2BRiiiled · 13/07/2012 18:58

I like it! Penelope and Penny are lovely.

Its a lovely name. And so what if its an "old" name. They are back in fashion anyway.

When I picked DDs name everyone said it was old fashioned/unusual. That was three years ago and now its in the top 20.

mybootsaremuddy · 13/07/2012 19:03

I think its lovely. I know 2 Pennys (both Penelope on BC) one is 16 and the other is 5mths.

wigglesrock · 13/07/2012 19:05

I don't think its very old fashioned. Its lovely to name the baby after someone who was so special in your life. All my daughters have middle names after great grannys etc and with one in particular I sometimes have a little twinge of regret not using the name as her first one.

mumblecrumble · 13/07/2012 19:07

Penny Penny Penny Penny Penny - DEFINITELY!!!!

  1. Its a LOVELY name
  2. Suits baby, kid, grown up and old person
  3. Easy to spell, say and understand [my name sin;t - its a nightmare...]
  4. it means something to you and your family
  5. It has a lovely lovely story behind it to telly our baby when she grows up
  6. How gives a flying fanjita feckaroo about what anyone else thinks about the name. Its lovely
DontmindifIdo · 13/07/2012 19:08

I don't think it's too 'old fashioned' - I think Penelope is gorgeous too if you want to do the big 'formal' name and then Penny as a lovely, lovely nickname.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 13/07/2012 19:08

I like it - and I agree it is lovely to give her a name that has a special family history. And loads of names that are very trendy at the moment, like Olivia or Eleanor, would have been seen as very old-fashioned when I was little. These things go in cycles.

WhyAlwaysBoris · 13/07/2012 19:10

I think it is a lovely name, and it is so special to be named after someone much loved.

Gnocchi i have commited your rules of baby naming to memory for (hopefully) future reference :)
