I like Megan (and Meg) but would like to know about it's history over the last few years. I know its been popular as i've looked at that great site which shows the popularity of names in graphs, but does it have any negative associations?

I have a feeling I've read or heard a couple of disparaging comments about it but can't remember what. This would bother me if this is the general perception. Can anyone shed some light on what I think is a lovely name.

Well, I thought I should comment as I have a Meg. She is just Meg, no longer name on the BC. Middle name Alice as I was toying between the two.

Ive always loved it and there are a couple of old Megs in my extended family circle so it has a nostalgia to it. Also, I live Little Women and Meg was always my favourote character as a young girl.

Ive never had any negative comments, but a couple of people have called her Megan which other people tend to correct on my behalf Grin.

Oh, the pharmacist did ask me how to spell it once Hmm

GnocchiNineDoors · 10/07/2012 15:13

Oh and ive never looked into its origin / history or popularity, sorry.

GinPalace · 10/07/2012 15:14

never heard a bad word said about it myself. I think it is lovely. :)

Thanks so far. Wonder where I've got this idea from that people don't like it - maybe I dreamt it Hmm

GnocchiNineDoors - Meg is lovely. I would never have thought spelling would be an issue though!

I think Meg is very sweet, and I actually prefer Meg to Megan!!

GnocchiNineDoors · 10/07/2012 15:34

It was because he didnt think it was a "real name" apparently. even came round the counter to have a look at her Grin

Megan is the girl in My Little Pony so I always loved the name growing up! I think I prefer Megan to Meg but both are lovely.

VolAuVent · 10/07/2012 16:00

Lovely name :)

drcrab · 10/07/2012 16:02

we loved Megan and wanted it for our first DC - he turned out to be a DS. second time round we did get a DD but I didn't think it went with our surname anymore although still love the name!!

TobyLerone · 10/07/2012 16:02

My sis is a Meghan, but usually just Meg. I think it's lovely.

Not really what you were asking badmakeup, and I assume you are in the UK, but I was wondering if it's only Australians who pronounce Megan with a long e (ie Meegan)? To me that's a classic 70s name! I think Meg on its own is just lovely though!

Italiangreyhound · 11/07/2012 00:14

Looks like it means Pearl

babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com/meaning_of_Megan.html

Origin: Greek Meaning: Pearl

Origin: Welsh Meaning: Little Pearl

Megan is a Welsh diminutive form of Margaret, from Greek 'margaron', "pearl", and thus means "little pearl".

The form may have been borrowed from, or given rise to such abbreviated forms as Meg, Maggie and Mags.

I like the short version Meggie (Thorn Birds fan) but prefer full name Megan for a full name.

Congratulations.

steppemum · 11/07/2012 00:28

lovely name. Personally I would go for Megan then you can shorten it if you like. I know a few around, but it's not over used

Would have used it myself but my bestfriend already had one!

GnocchiNineDoors · 11/07/2012 10:32

Nooooooo please tell me Meg doesnt mean Pearl? I want a Pearl next.....that would be too weird so may have to veto

TobyLerone · 11/07/2012 10:34

Does anyone really care what baby names actually mean? It wouldn't stop me naming my children names I liked if I found out that they meant the same thing.

I have a niece who is called Margaret, but has always been known as Meg, she is 11.
