Middle name for Arya?

This is hypothetical because we have no idea what DC1 will be (TTC) and I'm at work and bored Grin

DH and I LOVE Arya for a girl. We would pronounce it Ar-ya (2 syllables), as opposed to Ar-ee-ah.

What would you give as a middle name? Our surname is the rather simple and commonplace King if that helps.

Please only suggest middle names for Arya and not alternatives since we are dead set on that as a first name Smile

Any ideas?? So far we quite like Arya Emily, but can't think of anything else!

Hmm see I watch g of thrones and always thought it was pronouced ah-ree-ah there? Iv seen them all honest :)

theworldisoutthere · 10/07/2012 15:50

It is, forevergeek, but when DH and I read the books we pronounced it
Ar-ya in our heads Smile so that's what it is to us!

It's pronounced Ar-eee-aaa - as in an opera.

I always read it as Arry-a (which matches them calling her 'arry when she was pretending to be a boy). But there you go.

ErikNorseman · 10/07/2012 16:00

How do you say it like that though? Catelyn pronounces it Ah ya which I think would sound really affected in common speech. If you pronounce the R then it becomes Ar ee ah automatically no?

zxcv123 · 10/07/2012 22:40

Arya King?...= Are you king?

BarryShitpeas · 10/07/2012 22:42

You can't pronounce it like that! It just isn't. It's 3 syllables.

attheendoftheday · 11/07/2012 00:05

The op can pronounce it anyway she chooses!

I think ar-ya is the Game of Thrones pronounciation.

Metabilis3 · 11/07/2012 00:08

The actress who plays Cat says it funny. The rest say Ah-Ree-uh. Sean Bean certainly did.

Badgerina · 11/07/2012 06:45

I think they all pn it Ah-ya if I remember correctly - don't they? I do prefer the 3 syllable Ah-ree-ya pn. Like Aria from an opera.

I like the fact that you're using it, and are clearly massive GOT geeks, a lot more than I like the actual name. But since you like the name - the whole thing is awesome! Grin

I dunno about a mn. It's quite awkward to match with another name. Grace does sound good as suggested by a few others, but Grace is becoming such a filler name. Like Louise, or Marie were 20 years ago.

p.s she needs a dog called Nymeria. I know a mum with a daughter called Lyra, and a cat called Pantalaimon Grin Grin

sashh · 11/07/2012 06:57

p.s she needs a dog called Nymeria.

No she needs a dire wolf.

CaoNiMa · 11/07/2012 07:04

Arya Adolphe?

theworldisoutthere · 11/07/2012 08:39

That. Is. AWESOME.

Grace is SIL's middle name. I must say I'm still veering toward Emily, so should probably go with my gut on it!

Thanks to those who are backing up the pronunciation, you guys rock Thanks

The whole Game of Thrones things passes me by - never heard of it but I wouldn't be at all keen on it because of the possible 'Aryan' connection. A definate no-no from me I'm afraid.

badtime · 11/07/2012 15:39

I would just like to point out that it appears that the OP is not a 'Game of Thrones' geek; she is in fact a 'Song of Ice and Fire' geek. Which is a way better kind of geek to be.

(I always said Ar-ya as well)

(If I ever have a boy-child, he shall be Corwin as in Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber)

paradisechick · 11/07/2012 22:55

Please someone confirm that the suggestion of arya grace was a joke?

theworldisoutthere · 12/07/2012 11:08

badtime Grin a very valid point! Glad to have you on board! Grin

Just don't go with a middle name beginning with N - Arya N. King written down would look a bit "master race". :-/

Pandygirl · 12/07/2012 23:49

Coming from Yorkshire I wouldn't use that pronunciation. It comes across as "are you".

IHeartKingThistle · 12/07/2012 23:58

Sparkle I'm glad someone else said it first. I wouldn't have got the sci-fi connection and thought 'white supremacist' as soon as I heard it. Not accusing you of that OP of course! But that connotation would put me off using it tbh.

IHeartKingThistle · 13/07/2012 00:04

Meant to use an exclamation mark in that first sentence - without one it sounds like I'm a cross parent telling you off!
