Ok, so we had decided on Dorothy but hubby came home a couple of days ago and announced he had gone off the name as is worried it wont grow with her..Can see where he is coming from as see myself with a cute 3 year old Dorothy and of course when she's much older it will suit but its those teenage/twenties and thirties where she may well hate us for calling her it!..
So..we ve done our lists again and the above are the ones we can agree on...
Thoughts on above names and any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated..We have a boy already called George.... :)

Haha I have a 3 year old Dottie!! It's her nickname and her names not Dorothy! I like it and it suits her as does her proper name. I love Dorothy best and I love Molly too. Hate the others. The world does not need another Lily....

jujak · 06/07/2012 19:11

3 years ago when we chose George it wasnt a popular name but I have no regrets as it suits him so much and there are no others at his nursery and i ve only come into contact with 2 others in 3 years.. Sure they ll be a few more once he s at school but its an awesome name..

Just hope we can do as well for Little Miss! Smile

I thought the same as runner - Dorothea and Thea for short - very classy :)

DaPrincessBride · 06/07/2012 19:35

Love Heidi!

Jac1978 · 08/07/2012 04:47

Don't like Heidi or Dorothy, Ruby is lovely but hate lily - too dull and common and not good for her as an adult

NurseBernard · 08/07/2012 09:00

The world officially has enough Mollys, Lilys and Rubys.

Seriously - there are zillions of lovely, under-used girls names out there - why go for the same old, same old that everyone else and his dog is going for?

These names will date.

Well said, and if you need some help there are numerous baby name books
which are chock full of every type of name known to man and womankind

jujak · 08/07/2012 09:26

Yes and I have all the baby name books known to man and womankind.......

Thinking Matilda, Lucy or Sophia at the moment......

I saw a babies name in the birth column on FQRIDAY. Ada Elsie!!! Grin

shockers · 08/07/2012 09:29

I love Heidi, it's one of those always present, but not overused names. In my class there is a Lily, a Ruby and a Molly (Yr 3).

I also love Dorothy because it was the name of my wonderful Grandmother Smile.

AnnaNimitty · 08/07/2012 09:34

Hope you don't mind me saying that if you have so many baby name books
how come all the names you have chosen are in the top ten most popular (common) names in England at the present time? No offence meant!

jujak · 08/07/2012 09:43

Mmm that i would say is due to having a very fussy husband!ha His list was horrendous and over the last 9 months we have agreed on Matilda then Dorothy and now we are stuck!

I want something different so she isnt one of so many in a class but not so different that she hates it...

Its so hard!....

And no offence taken...everyone has an opinion and its why i posted to get ideas so all are greatfully received....

Out of interest what girls names do you have or would you choose??

Matilda, Dorothy, Heidi, Lucy, Ivy, Iris, and Sophia are Ok. The others are just too ubiquitous.

Lucy is probably my favourite of them all.

AnnaNimitty · 08/07/2012 10:22

First of all may I suggest that you need to get tough with your husband! As far as my personal preferences are concerned, I have asked some of my family and my son likes Hephzibah, my daughter likes Olivia, my neice likes
Sapphire and I quite like Tabitha, Pearl, Ianthe, Seraphina, Emmeline, Edith, Athene, Rose and ....Ruby

diddl · 08/07/2012 11:04

I like Heidi as well.

Lucia instead of Lucy?

jujak · 08/07/2012 11:06

Some 'different' choices there with a couple of popular (apparently common) choices thrown in.... Ruby being one of our original choices...

Anyway..thanks for all opinions/suggestions..No need to get tough with him as i ll have the final say anyway!!haha We shall make a decision based on something we both like and depending on what she looks like just like we did for George! Smile

Personally not keen on Dorothy, it feels so late-middle aged to me. As nn's go Dot is too diminutive and dottie means mad.

Heidi is lovely and has a bit of spark about it - as did the Heidi in the book. There are an awful lot of 0-5s named Lily, Ruby and Molly. Unless you have 3 daughters and give one of those names to all of them then there's no real link to K Katona, so don't worry about that.

Someone else had made a great suggestion - Audrey; as an 'older' name it's much more elegant and sophisticated than Dorothy. Think Audrey Hepburn.

TheWicketKeeperIsDown · 08/07/2012 16:17

There will be about 25 Rubys in her year at school, and a fair few Lilys and Mollys as well.

I think Dot/Dottie is miles nicer and not done to death.

AnnaNimitty · 08/07/2012 17:34

Pretentious, moi?

Lannie33 · 09/07/2012 20:30

I love Lily so much but here in Canada it seems every single Lily I know is Asian-not sure why but over here all Lily's, Shirley's and Raymond's are Chinese. Probably not an issue in UK :)
In that case I'd vote Lily and then either Molly or Ruby (both equal to me), not keen on the others.

NappiesandGladrags · 09/07/2012 23:21

Heidi or Ruby for me

but as others have said if you love Dorothy and the more classical sounding name how about:

Martha
Susannah
Nina
Vivienne
Francesca
Flora
Honor

Jackie432 · 13/07/2012 07:52

I really like Heidi and Lily and have these both on my short list! Not so keen on Dorothy or Molly.

VolAuVent · 13/07/2012 08:17

Lucy and Sophia are lovely, both classics :)
