Boy or girl? I love the 'americanised' surname type names I know do many mn'ers hate. Not pregnant just bored at work and wondering what everyone thinks...

Americans didn't invent surnames as first names. They have been used in
the North of England and Scotland for centuries. BRANWELL Bronte anyone?

IawnCont · 06/07/2012 12:53

I like it as a boy's name.

lisaro · 06/07/2012 12:55

Neither. Not even a pet. Hideous.

squoosh · 06/07/2012 12:56

Very American

Showmethemhappyfeet · 06/07/2012 12:57

I didn't mean it was from America as such, just a lot of mn'ers refer to surnames as first names as 'too American'

Americans seem to have a preference for those surnames which originated as a description of a person's trade.

Cooper
Taylor
Tyler
Mason
Smith
Carter

etc etc.

rather than the UK tradition of ancestral surnames being used a first names.

Showmethemhappyfeet · 06/07/2012 13:02

I love Cooper and Carter tooBlush

No need for blushy-face, it's your prerogative to like any style of name you like!

AdventuresWithVoles · 06/07/2012 13:15

OI, I had a cat called (Tom) Sawyer. My ten-yo self thought it a perfectly acceptable for a pet.
I just think there are nicer names, even among the choices of those used commonly as forenames (Tyler, Taylor, Rutger, Harrison, etc.)

SoozyWoozy · 06/07/2012 13:20

Makes me think of the US tv show, Lost.

I don't mind surnames as first names, but not Sawyer. Don't know why! :)

weasar · 06/07/2012 13:29

I really like it but not sure I would be brave enough to use it myself!
I definitely think it is a boys name, and quite american but I still like it.

perceptionreality · 06/07/2012 13:30

No, don't do it!

SpagboLagain · 06/07/2012 13:30

Sauce

MiseryBusiness · 06/07/2012 13:32

Reminds me of Sawyer from Lost.

I dont know if I like it.

Definite NO for a girl, though.

TouTou · 06/07/2012 13:35

I know a little girl Sawye, friend of my DD. Posh family, north american.

But with a Brit accent like my DD has, it sounds like Soya. In fact, my DD has spelt it this way on occasions. I still like the name, but only because I like the girl, but it's not my cup of tea otherwise.

TouTou · 06/07/2012 13:36

Sorry - the girls name is Sawyer. Lost an 'R' at the end there, but you may as well get used to it if you call your DC that in England!

Tillyscoutsmum · 06/07/2012 13:37

I do know of a little boy called Sawyer.... My immediate thought is Lost (and oh what a nice thought !!) but I do like it

VolAuVent · 06/07/2012 16:18

I don't like it. Everyone will try to spell it Soya.

rimmerfleadick · 06/07/2012 16:21

Yep will get a sauce nickname.

MyPetMonsterAndMe · 07/07/2012 01:09

A family member has a 2 year old daughter named Sawyer. I wasn't sure at first but it has grown on me, it suits her. (I am Canadian if this makes any difference)
