What do people think of the name Amelie? Do you know many? How would you say it? Thanks!

LaGuerta · 05/07/2012 16:46

I know several. I don't like it (sorry) because to me it smacks of people trying to be "a bit continental" following the film of the same name. I prefer English names like Amelia and Emily. I have heard it pronounced "A-meh-lee".

MrsJohnDeere · 05/07/2012 16:48

Lovely. I only know one but she is adorable, so maybe I'm biased in favour.

shelley72 · 05/07/2012 16:48

am-el-ie. considered it for DD. i quite liked it - until i met one, but dont let that put you off Smile. think there are also a few cropping up at nursery so may be getting more popular?

MrsJohnDeere · 05/07/2012 16:50

To answer part 2 of the Q I would say A-meh-lee. The one I know is more often known as Amie (a-mee).

squoosh · 05/07/2012 16:54

Reminds me of that film.

I don't like that film.

nizlopi · 05/07/2012 17:26

I work at a school and I've noticed at least 5 or 6, which is pretty much one per class tbh.

MammaTonic · 05/07/2012 17:38

Sorry OP, but I agree with LaGuerta. Its a very nice name but I do hear that thought in the back of my mind when I hear it.

I prefer Emily/Amelia/Emilia :)

AgathaTrunchbull · 05/07/2012 17:48

If you take a look at baby naming stats, it's very clear that there was a massive rise in the number of Amelies after the film came out. Barely used before that.

I know a tiny one, pronounced A-meh-lee. She's cute, but don't think much of the name. Just sounds like 'Emily' wasn't fancy-sounding enough. Also increasingly common.

VolAuVent · 05/07/2012 18:03

I prefer Amelia or Emily.

CherryBlossom27 · 05/07/2012 18:16

I'd pronounce it ah-mee-lee. I think it's a very pretty name and very feminine. It's a popular name, but with good reason I think.

evamummy · 05/07/2012 18:18

There are a lot of girls named Emily/Amelie/Emila in our school.

hatebeak · 05/07/2012 18:34

It's not the worst name in the world or anything but I really don't like it, for reasons mentioned above by LaGuerta, Squoosh and AgathaTrunchbull. Sorry.

BelleStar · 05/07/2012 22:24

I personally know 3 born in the last 8 months. It's pretty.

PuggyMum · 05/07/2012 22:27

I know 3 Amelie's - pronounce am-el-ee also.

Littlecherublegs · 06/07/2012 11:43

I know of one born in the last month.

They were slightly concerned about naming her it as they thought it might sound a bit too 'foreign' and people would get it wrong saying Amelia or Emily all the time. I would have the same concerns and wouldnt go for it myself - however, they obviously did and seem happy!

They pronounce it Am-el-ee too.

Dollydowser · 06/07/2012 11:48

I considered it for my dd (now age 8) as I really liked it. I am quite pleased I didn't use it though as I have met lots of Amelies in that time.

OneLittleBabyTerror · 06/07/2012 13:32

I'd say it as it's said in the film, because I just think of it as a French name. So A-meh-lee too. Otherwise, it just sounds like Emily.

EvenBetter · 07/07/2012 00:19

Doesn't it mean 'missing limb', medically, or is that Amelia?

sashh · 07/07/2012 03:53

It makes me think of Madeline McCann - I think it's her sister's name.

TheWicketKeeperIsDown · 08/07/2012 16:22

That's Amelia, EvenBetter

I thinks it's a nice name, but everybody and their dog seems to use it now.

ilovemybum · 08/07/2012 18:43

I know of 1. Pronounced Am-el-ee.

Chocolateporridge · 08/07/2012 18:56

I love it and if we have a second dd it'll be a top contender as our dd1 is Elodie which is also French, and my sister is Emily.

Lannie33 · 09/07/2012 20:38

I like it. don't know any. Am-el-ee. Prefer Emily myself but also like Amelie.

bishboschone · 09/07/2012 20:41

I like emilie .. I may have made it up but someone recently sent me a text saying they have named their daughter that and I though lovely . E-mee..lee .... But no , it was a poncey way of spelling Emily ... Meh!!

bishboschone · 09/07/2012 20:41

The e makes an eh sound
