Nia or Nina?

I thought we had DD2's name sorted, however DH has now thrown a spanner in the works!

I have always loved the name Nina. DH said he preferred another name for DD1 which I also loved. This time I suggested Nina again but DH said he hates the name and can't see us ever using it. Having accepted I'd never have a DD called Nina, Nia became the final choice as we both really like it. I was about to order baby's name for nursery wall and DH announced that he's changed his mind and now likes Nina. Now we can't decide whether to use Nia or Nina.

My thoughts / concerns are:

Nia - will DD2 have to tell people how to pronounce her name? (Nee-ah not ny-ah) I like that it is unusual in England but don't want to create a lifelong problem of pronunciation for DD2. Also I have been thinking of DD2 as Nia since DH vetoed Nina.

Nina - DH was so adament he hated this name that I feel unsure about using it now, but it has always been a firm favourite of mine. Also I know DM doesn't like this name and sees it as an old lady name as it was also the name of my great grandmother.

Over to you, MN jury. Which would you pick?

I know one of each and although I wouldnt choose either of them myself, they are both quite sweet.

I think Nia would be my preference as it is less 'old woman-ish'.

language · 04/07/2012 12:24

I prefer Nina, it's more elegant IMO!

bronze · 04/07/2012 12:26

I have a nia so am biased. It for us it was partly chosen because of it being a welsh name

bigknickersbigknockers · 04/07/2012 12:29

Another vote for Nia... Nina is a tad common

squoosh · 04/07/2012 12:31

Definitely Nina. It's much prettier and I have never thought of it as an old lady name. Far from it.

The Nia/Mia/Pia/Gia/Ria/Tia/Zia names lack a bit of oomph.

alana39 · 04/07/2012 12:35

I associate Nina with bright young Scot with a head full of talking neurones, not old ladies.

Have never heard of Nia though.

Both are ok, if you've always liked Nina I don't understand why you're unsure now.

MrsJohnDeere · 04/07/2012 12:40

Nina.

Nia sounds made up to me. I think you/she would forever be having to spell it out, explain it (no, not Mia, not Nina, Nia etc).

bronze · 04/07/2012 12:48

Grin at nia being made up. I assume Osian does too the.

squoosh · 04/07/2012 12:56

I'd never heard it before, and would have assumed it was made up except someone mentioned it was Welsh. Always happy to be corrected.

I'm familar with Osian, I believe it's derived from the Irish name Oisín.

MrsJohnDeere · 04/07/2012 13:00

I'm half Welsh and hadn't heard of it.

IawnCont · 04/07/2012 13:00

:o bronze

Isitme1 · 04/07/2012 13:06

I like nia but mia is my fav Grin
Nina does sound old ladish to me Blush

squoosh · 04/07/2012 13:06

Intersting in the Irish legend it's Niamh, Oisín and Tír na nÓg.

I didn't know the Welsh were into our Irish legends.

5madthings · 04/07/2012 13:07

i like Nia and know a few actually, on spelt niah.

my dp wanted nina for our dd, i can only think of nina and the neurons wihc was enough to put me off!

IawnCont · 04/07/2012 13:14

squoosh It was the basis of a Welsh poem by Thomas Gwynn Jones, and we have a musical based on it too.

squoosh · 04/07/2012 13:35

A musical you say? Fancy!

The Welsh do love a sing song given half a chance.

Badgerina · 04/07/2012 13:41

Nia or Nina? Neither - not keen on either I'm afraid.

Jojay · 04/07/2012 13:41

Nina, definitely. Nia, despite it's welsh roots, sounds a bit 'now' to me, like Mia.

Nina is elegant and more timeless. I know a Georgina known as Nina.

GnocchiNineDoors · 04/07/2012 13:45

I have 'Nia' tucked away for use on any future dds.

I like Nina but couldnt get past Father of the Bride

HappyJulia · 04/07/2012 14:07

I like Nina!!! sounds great :-)

VolAuVent · 04/07/2012 14:20

I really like both, but today would pick Nia.

Trills · 04/07/2012 14:26

Of the two, Nina, because it's a name that I have heard of.

MoonHare · 04/07/2012 17:04

A word of warning on Nia, depending on where you live/she ends up living many people, in the North East for example, pronounce the word near as nee-ah. I do and even though I can appreciate it's a pretty name it sounds a little odd to my ear (ee-ah) always makes me think - "Near, far, where-ever you are..."

I think I may have made this point on your last thread OP!

So I'd go with Nina. Underused, pretty but strong. My DH had a change of heart over a name that I loved and he had twice vetoed. I was unsure whether he might change his mind back but we went with the name and have no regrets, he loves it now and it absolutely suits DD2. I'm now very glad he did change his mind.

Good luck with your decision.

Nospringflower · 04/07/2012 17:10

I like Nina but not Nia. How has your DH done such an about turn though? That would worry me ...

GnocchiNineDoors · 04/07/2012 17:27

Its not a North East thing....Nia is pronounced Nee-ah.
