Which names do you predict will become popular in the next 10 years?

I see two trends continuing

  1. Parents are always looking for 'new' names so will continue to look to old fashioned names that were used about 80-100 years before

  2. So called 'posh' names will continue to move down the ranks, as described very well in 'freakonomics'

  3. I think also that people will start to get tired of the current 'cutesy' trend and start to prefore more 'solid' names.

So I expect these types of names to continue to rise in popularity:

Arthur, Quentin, Sebastian, Stanley, John, Peter, Agatha, Florence, Constance, Emma, Constance, etc.

Names go in cycles and we're always trying to find new, fresh sounding names (rather than those of our parent's or or own generation), so 'old' names will continue to rise in popularity imo:

Agnes, Alice, Audrey,Beatrice, Bessie, Blanche, Cicely, Cora, Cordelia, Dinah, Dora, Dorothea, Dorothy, Harriet, Edith, Elise, Elsie, Elspeth, Emily, Emmeline, Esme, Eva, Evelyn, Evie, Flora, Florence, Greta, Gretchen, Harriet, Hattie, Irene, Iris, Ivy, Lena, Lilith, Lillian, Mabel, Maggie, Margaret, Martha, Mary, Matilda, May, Millicent, Millie, Meredith, Myrtle, Nell, Nellie, Nora, Olive, Pearl, Rosaline, Rosalie, Rose, Winifred

Abraham, Albert, Alfie, Alfred, Archie, Archibald, Arthur, Benedict, Cecil, Charles, Charlie, Edward, Edwin, Eric, Ernest, Ezra, Frank, Freddie, Frederick, George, Henry, Jack, Quentin, Reggie, Reginald, Stanley, Ted, Winston.

Names of the 1960's

littletomato · 04/07/2012 13:59

I predict there'll be more borrowing from other cultures, particularly asia and the middle east, ancient egypt/greece/mayan/indian/etc. and fantasy/sci fi, all in an attempt to find more unusual, "mystical" names.

Badgerina · 04/07/2012 14:09

Nah. None of that. I think the only way to go is post-modern.

Babies born to futurist parents will be called:

World (nn Whirly)
Concept (nn Connie)
Beyond (nn Bee)
Story (rhymes with Rory)
Guide (nn Guy)
New
Graphic (nn Graf)
Fact
Fiction (Fact's twin)
Secret
Construct (nn Con)

Babies born to space-age parents will be called:

Atom
Galaxy
Comet
Nebula
Electron
Orbit
Quasar

Babies born to parents who want a bit of "retro-fabulous" will call their babies:

Alchemist (nn Al)
Century (nn Cen)
Antiquity (nn Annie)
Ephemera (nn Effie)
Gallery (nn Gally)
Engine (nn Gin/Ginnie)
Poem
Ladle

VolAuVent · 04/07/2012 14:23

The new retro could be...

Peter, John, James, Michael, Eric

Susan, Diana, Barbara, Jane, Kathleen

I agree with evamummy but also think that people are looking to the 'safety' of older fashioned names during these turbulent times. I would say the names of the 20's and 30's will continue to enjoy a resurgence in popularity.

I don't think we are ready to bring back the Barry, Colin, Simon, Belinda kind of names yet although I might be wrong!!

squoosh · 04/07/2012 14:46

Barry is just an offence to any baby.

Sorry to all the Barrys out there but it's just not acceptable.

bananaramma · 04/07/2012 15:47

Agree with evamummy, especially re. old fashioned and 'posh' names becoming more mainstream.

Our children will most certainly be naming our grandchildren Michael, Colin, Simon, Susan and Jane - they will sound 'exotic' and 'different' to them, just like we like our grandparents names currently.

shoobidoo · 04/07/2012 21:25

These 1940s names are not far away imo:

Jennifer
Barbara
Rosemary
Carol
David
Stephen
Michael
Richard

paperclips · 04/07/2012 22:35

Agree with Shoobidoo

There's names popular amongst people now in their 60s and 70s , that maybe will come round again if not for our grandchildren, then our great-grandchildren.

I love the name Joan. There's something simple yet classy about it. Strong.

Also can see Jean, Janet, Susan, Mary, June, Linda ,Jane etc eventually coming back around . And for blokes- names like Brian, Roger, Geoffrey, Ron, Roy, Colin will be ones that come round in 50 odd years. These names- they all seem to have a simple no-nonsense quality. I like them they just sound kind of wrong for new little people at the moment.

AnnaNimitty · 06/07/2012 10:10

I predict the names Emmeline, Persephone, Rosalie/Rosalind and Sylvia/Sylvie will enter the top 100 within the next few years.

tammy234 · 06/07/2012 10:45

I predict an end of the fashion for cute nicknamey names (Alfie, Archie, Charlie, Milly, Tilly, Lily) and for more solid classic names to rise in popularity.

Yes, agree about Persephone, Emmeline as well as Seraphina, Rosemary, Florence, Agatha and for boys Arthur, Robert, Peter, Quentin, Miles, Cassius, Caspar, Nathan and John.

NarkedRaspberry · 06/07/2012 13:51

Freakonomics. Go and look at the Reception classes of uber pricey and exclusive schools.
