It is the only name that DH and I both agree on and I'm annoyed that she and F are being so negative about our choice. She launched into a rant about how the poor boy will be open to ridicule at school, it's a dogs name and they just don't like it. They'd prefer a name like Jack or Thomas. We probably shouldn't have mentioned it, but she asked and I knew they'd probably be a bit weird about it and would rather get their weirdness out of the way before DS arrives. The name is Otto, by the way. I did have a little reservation about using it, i.e. we have no German heritage, but I was starting to overcome this as we do really love the name. I'm now wavering! So, thoughts on Otto, please. Apologies for the mini rant!

Just remembered that our next door neighbour's cat was called Otto. However, in mitigation, it was the most beautiful cat I think I've ever seen (one of those bluey grey short hairs)

Your mother shouldn't have gone on about it. And she will get used to it. My SIL called her first son a name her mother obviously hated. There was a bit of prune lips but she adores the baby and now it's just his name.

I like Otto Smile

My MIL on being told our carefully chosen name for dd - 'oh no! You can't call her that!!'

Thanks.

Have refused to discussed names this time

Why on earth does your mother think she gets a say in what you call your child?

You'll never choose a name that everyone likes, so if you and your DH love it then it shouldn't bother you what others think.

mumblecrumble · 07/07/2012 07:57

I think Otto is a gorgeous name for ababy baoy, or a teenager or an older man. Your Mum can naff off

She was very rude to say that,

hidingbeneathanamechange · 07/07/2012 08:04

I hate it.... but then I hate my own name and survived for years with no ill effects. If you like it, use it. It is no one else's business (and if your DS hates it he can always change it when he is old enough).

Leftwingharpie · 07/07/2012 08:32

OP you better start a new thread! Grin

MelanieWiggles · 07/07/2012 08:45

I hear "Otto" and I think of the stoner school bus driver in the Simpsons - "Hi I'm Otto, I like to get blotto". Your choice though !

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 07/07/2012 09:46

It's fine
If you like it use it
You might see him and change your mind anyway.

I was expected to aloof my MiL to name my babies.
Hahahahahahaha
Mind you, her taste was at least as eclectic as mine.

Spoutlet · 07/07/2012 11:39

I should start a new thread Leftwing: names to antagonise family! I think we will go with Otto, if it is a boy Smile. We need to get our thinking caps on in case he is a she. I quite like Matilda... DM will be told she's called Affability Grin.

Our parents all hated DD1´s name. I am Scottish, my DH is German and we chose a Greek name.

She´s called Electra. She is now 5 and it´s the only possible name for her. The parents were so delighted when she was born that all comments were forgotten. If you think he´s an Otto then great, I suspect (& hope) that your family will come round.

SummerRain · 07/07/2012 11:57

When I spoke to my mother on the phone from my bed in thematernity ward she asked me 'are you sure you should call him that? It might be a bit difficult for people' in that tone of voice. It's a five letter name with no difficult pronunciation!

Mothers ate weird... Ignore!

Prefer Hugo & Bruno-fantastic.

But hey-I called my children what weI wanted to.

When I told my mum the name of my PFB (after the birth)-she said that she didn´t like it much.

If your mum would be likely to do that, better to know beforehand imo.

Because it bloody hurts to be told after.

Told her I wasn´t asking her fucking opinion but telling her what her GC´s name was.
