i really like the name Austen, spelt like this, rather than Austin, which I think doesn't look as nice and which I associate with a student I teach. I also love Jane Austen and like that association. What do you all think of the name Austen?

I think it's lovely and unusual ***

whatinthewhatnow · 02/07/2012 10:09

yep brill, I know an Austen (just one) and I think it's a great name. I've always thought austin looks cheaper. I can't explain why!

minipie · 02/07/2012 10:52

For a boy or for a girl?

I like both spellings.

Stellan · 02/07/2012 11:11

Even with the literary spelling, this name still sounds very American to me! That said, I quite like it and by spelling it Austen you at least sidestep the Austin Powers connection!

PrincessOfChina · 02/07/2012 11:12

I like it.never considered it before. Boy or girl? I'd be tempted girl...

I know a two year old girl called Bronte.

Stellan · 02/07/2012 11:13

I think it is a boys' name.

dollydoops · 02/07/2012 11:13

For a boy- I really don't like masculine names on girls. Stellan, that is what I am worried about- that it will sound too American!

Princess, I know an adult Bronte! I think that sounds more 'girly' than Austen, though.

It's a boys name. I know a couple of elderly Irish farmers called Austin.

EdithWeston · 02/07/2012 11:47

It's a boys name: think of the rugby player Austin Healey (actually, that's a combination I'd swerve: it's fine with non-automobile surnames).

PrincessOfChina · 02/07/2012 11:52

I know Austin is a boys name, for some totally random reason Austen feels more girly.

I have several friends who considered Elliott for a girl and I guess I think it's that sort of name.

mayanna123 · 02/07/2012 11:54

I think Austen is lovely. Also like Auden.

Good solid and not overused namd!

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 02/07/2012 11:59

I know seven!! It must have been incredibly popular here 30 years ago as there are 6 living in my local area who I would know, my cousin is Austin too.
I'm not mad on it, maybe because it is so popular here?

SoozyWoozy · 02/07/2012 12:52

if my DC is a boy, we will use Austin as a mn as it is a family surname. That part of my family were Londoners many years ago, so no American connection that I am aware of.

I like both spellings :)

Littlecherublegs · 02/07/2012 12:58

I agree with Princessofchina that Austen seems a bit more girly than Austin to me. Maybe its the Jane Austen link??!!

I know of one Austin (boy) and I do quite like it though would definitely spell it like this.

MiladyBrochTuarach · 02/07/2012 13:03

My friend's middle name is Austen, after Jane Austen, because she is his great great (x however many) aunt, which I think is a brilliant origin behind the name.

It's a lovely name anyway, as is Austin as other posters have suggested, I say go for it!

princessbonnie · 02/07/2012 13:26

hi

yes its a lovely name never heard anyone with it x

wigglesrock · 02/07/2012 20:23

I'm in NI and know some - all boys/men. I too know a few elderly farmers Grin but also 3 or so under 10s - all spelt Austin.
