I believe this has a Old Testament origin, a brook or river. 'Ch' like chair rather than like Cher. I don't know any girls named this recently. Lifetime of difficulty or pleasantly different?

She'd be called Cherry for the rest of her life I think. Its not an unpleasant name, just an odd one and I don't think I like it, iyswim? Its a touch chavvy I think, and not to my taste. I've definitively never heard it before though.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 01/07/2012 21:23

I think it sounds a bit like saying cherish with a lisp.

vigglewiggle · 01/07/2012 21:25

I'm with pickle

picnicbasketcase · 01/07/2012 21:26

It reminds me of Jareth from Labyrinth.

DidntChaKnow · 01/07/2012 21:28

I also thought of 'cherish' with a lisp.

dontknowwhattochoose · 01/07/2012 21:39

oh well, it is a proper biblical name, not made up, though maybe a bit anglicised.

back to ella/ellie/eva/ava?

being different is tricky!

What about Charis?

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 01/07/2012 22:19

Carys?

VolAuVent · 01/07/2012 22:43

I like it :)

manicinsomniac · 01/07/2012 22:51

I think it's pretty. I also think Cherry is a lovely nickname.

I had a friend called Cherry when I was very little. I don't think that was short for anything though.

mathanxiety · 01/07/2012 22:53

Rather favoured by the likes of Ian Paisley I think.

It's a nice name but I would expect a Cherith to be a member of a pretty fundamentalist family.

I prefer Charis.

FootballFriendSays · 01/07/2012 22:54

Sounds like a lisp.

Stellan · 02/07/2012 07:58

I also thought of 'cherish' being said by someone with a lisp.

It also appears to be a place name rather than a given name (at least according to Wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherith).

AnnaNimitty · 02/07/2012 09:56

Cherith sounds like Sheriff!

EverSoLagom · 02/07/2012 10:02

I went to school with a Cheren, it wasn't shortened to anything as far as I remember. I think Cherith is pretty.

whatinthewhatnow · 02/07/2012 10:11

cerys/carys is easier. cherith is making me sing madonna's 'cherish' with a lisp.

squoosh · 02/07/2012 11:45

lispy
