Which pronounciation do you prefer???

I am totally set on the name Clementine if I end up having a dd! The only problem is that I cannot decide on which pronounciation I prefer!

I had originally loved it pronounced Clemen teen but lately have started to prefer Clemen tyne! I am also terrified that the name would ever be shortened to Tina which I detest! Which sorta also puts me off the Clemen teen option!

Any advice much appreciated!

I'd pronounce it ending -tyne. Love it by the way Smile

I have one and tina has never been an option! Sometime she does get "teeny tiny", but she's usually Clem or Clemmie.

We were unsure which pronunciation to go for and it has kind of settled on Tyne by default - not that I mind if anyone calls her teen.

It's a fab name!

BardOfBarking · 01/07/2012 21:08

teen for me, mostly to stop everybody bursting into a chorus of
"Oh my darrrr-ling, Oh my darrr-ling'

spotofcheerfulness · 01/07/2012 21:08

I think most english people would automatically say "tyne" after the oh my darling song. Teen is nice too, but you might end up having to explain it more.

TruthSweet · 01/07/2012 21:09

I use Clemen -tyne as the pron. for a name and Clemen-teen for the fruit

LondonNadiy · 01/07/2012 21:11

I've always used/heared Clemen-teen. Just call her what you want her to be called all the time if you're worried about the 'Tina' nns, and she'll correct people soon enough under her own steam. Is 'Tyne' a more attractive nn to you either? If you think it is, go for Clemen-'tyne'

Use both for a while and see which one trips off the tongue, and stick with that one, its not like they're spelt differently.

DottieRose · 01/07/2012 21:24

I'm surprised so far with most of you going for the Tyne pronounciation, I thought it would be the other way round!! I know it's a fab name if I do say so myself Blush hopefully I will have a dd and get to use it!!

I would say Clemen tyne.

Lovely name BTW.

3boysgirlontheway · 01/07/2012 21:48

Tyne is the only way I can imagine it being pronounced. Great name.

VolAuVent · 01/07/2012 22:44

Clemen-Tyne.

mathanxiety · 01/07/2012 22:55

I would use the teen pronunciation because of the Oh my Darling song. I think this is how Clementine Churchill said it.

FootballFriendSays · 01/07/2012 23:00

Not keen on it but I'd probably go with -teen.

mayanna123 · 02/07/2012 11:56

Clement-een for me.

I like the full name but don't like Clem or Clemmie - sounds like clam/clammy and not very feminine imo.

SLVC · 02/07/2012 12:37

I would go for Tyne, as it's a lovely name, but teen kind of allies it with Geraldine or Christine, which I don't think are nearly as nice...

I actually love Clem as a nn too. Probably as my daughter loves the Charlie and Lola story with the cute little Clem they meet at the beach!

Minty82 · 02/07/2012 17:19

I always thought -tine was the American pronunciation and -teen was British? Both pretty.

CheerfulYank · 02/07/2012 17:50

Tyne for sure. :)

MoonHare · 02/07/2012 20:19

You might want to pronounce it teen but it's very likely anyone seeing it written down will say tyne, as that's the usual pronunciation.

If you go with teen she'll spend her life having to correct everyone. Just embrace the most common pronunciation, there's no getting away from the song either way.

Stellan · 03/07/2012 09:22

It's for this reason that I prefer Clemency or Clementina (teena)!

ComradeJing · 03/07/2012 13:45

My best friend at school was Clementine (teen) she was Clemmie to everyone and clem to her closest friends.

I have never met a Tina for Clementine.

Lannie33 · 03/07/2012 20:10

Tyne! Not the biggest Clementine fan but I'm canadian so it's just a fruit to me. :) Nice sound tho!

squeak2392 · 06/07/2012 17:15

Definitely -tyne!

-teen just doesn't sound like a name to me.

LuellaLovesLavender · 15/07/2012 17:48

I don't know which I would go with they are both just so nice!

hellymelly · 15/07/2012 17:52

I've only ever heard it the "tyne" way, not the "teen". I know one, she is lovely, it is a really pretty name. My flame-haired friend was set on it if she had a small flame-haired dd, but she has two dss so didn't get to use it.

MammaTonic · 15/07/2012 19:13

I'd say -tyne. I love the name, btw. It's Kate Winslet's character in 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' which is a beautiful and very moving film, IMO. Clem is awesome :)

Teen. But I have known two who both pronounced it this way (one English, one French).
