Same name as a plant?

Until earlier this week DH and I were agreed on calling our daughter (due in two weeks) Rosemary. As a nickname Hubby would call her Rosie, whereas I would call her Rose - neither of us would ever use Rosemary. So this got me thinking perhaps we should just call her Rose, but with our surname Mallows - this is also the name of a plant! I very pretty plant, but a plant nevertheless.

Hubby isn't bothered either way - he's going to call her Rosie regardless, and has left it to me to choose. I just can't decide. Would giving your child the same name as a plant really put you off it? or I am just being silly.

A lot of MNers seem to think you should give the full name in the BC but personally I don't see the point of giving her a name you are never going to use. I think Rosie Mallows is lovely and had never heard of the plant before your post.

I haven't heard of the plant, either. Also think Rosie Mallows is lovely :) You could use Rose or Rosie, I don't really see the point of giving a name you never intend to use.

kasbah72 · 01/07/2012 21:02

What about Rosalie? It has a similar sound to Rosie and so might be a better 'long' version if that's what you want.

Failing that, Rosie/Rose are lovely as they are and I certainly wouldn't have made the plant connection. If it is a pretty plant and not some poisonous weed then it doesn't matter anyway!! After all, Rosemary is also a plant...

I think Rose is a plenty proper name, and Rosemary is a plant as well so whats the sudden issue with Rose Mallows? Rosalie is really pretty and more unusual as another option.

How about Rosamund or Primrose?

TodaysAGoodDay · 02/07/2012 11:47

Rose-Anne or Rosanne or Rosanna

mayanna123 · 02/07/2012 11:55

Rosemary Mallows for me. Lovely!

BikeRunSki · 02/07/2012 11:56

Rose is a proper name!
I have never heard of Rose Mallow (very un-green fingers me).

SoozyWoozy · 02/07/2012 12:50

I had to google it :)

A rose mallow, or Lavatera, is a very pretty flower! Much nicer looking than a rosemary bush IMO :)

savoycabbage · 02/07/2012 12:52

It's madness to call her Rosemary if you are never going to use it as Rose is a name in it's own right.

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 02/07/2012 12:56

I think any variation is pretty, but then I would as dd is Rosina - Rosie to most people and Rose to me :)

sashh · 02/07/2012 14:07

Well both Rose and Rosemary are plants anyway.

Nonio · 02/07/2012 14:12

Rosie mallows sounds lovely sorry don't like Rosemary also if you never use it, it will become a naughty name used at school

farmerswifey · 03/07/2012 08:38

Thank you for responding, lots to think about.

I understand 'Rose' and 'Rosemary' are both names of plants, the only way I can explain it is like calling your child Basil and having the surname Jones - 'Basil Jones', yes the first name is a herb but with the surname it doesn't seem anything out of the ordinary but if your surname were 'Leaf' giving your child the name 'Basil Leaf', you would automatically think "Ooh ha ha Basil Leaf - you're a herb" This is how I worry my child will be seen, 'Rose' yes it is the name of a plant, but with our surname Mallows her complete name would also be a plant. It would appear though that not too many people have heard of Rose Mallows so we may be in the clear.

Rose Mallow is in no way comparable to Basil Leaf!

Rose Mallow is a lovely name, so is Rosemary Mallow.

PurplePidjin · 03/07/2012 08:55

Rosemary Mallow runs the risk (which I'm also finding with dp's M surname) of being a mumble name. Too many names i like sound like you've got toffee in your teeth when you say them together!

Rose is a lovely name, nn Rosie, I would use that. Lavatera is a lovely plant, and you're at just as much risk of her being called Marsh as a nn...
