What do you think of this name for a girl? It is Welsh, DH and I are Welsh, living in southern England. I don't think there should be any pronunciation issues.

Thank you!

I really like it - thought was French though (manon de sources).

I rather like the "manon manon da daaa da da da" muppets thing you could have going on too! Grin

AWomanCalledHorse · 01/07/2012 10:46

I went to school with a Manon, her nn was Mark or Marking (as 'Man on' is a type of marking in sports like football/basketball).

Also it's the fake deity in the 90s film The Craft.

I feel a bit 'meh' about it, don't love it, don't hate it, IYSWIM?

Jux · 01/07/2012 11:00

I thought it was French, too.

MrsHuxtable · 01/07/2012 12:05

Also thought it was French. I have a Luxemburgish friend with that name and it's quote normal there.

duchesse · 01/07/2012 12:13

It is French! It's the accepted shortened form of Marie-Madeleine. But also popular in Wales.

LeeCoakley · 01/07/2012 12:24

As long as your surname's not Topp...

CelticRepublican · 01/07/2012 12:24

I love it. DH and I are Welsh exiles too. There is already a Manon in our family or we would definitely consider it for a girl.

VolAuVent · 01/07/2012 12:25

I don't really like it, sorry. But if you like it use it!

WithACherryOnTop · 01/07/2012 12:25

Isn't it French?

I really like it anyway, but I love Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources.

I think it'd work well at any age too.

JoannaFight · 01/07/2012 12:31

I like but but thought it was French too. I think it only really works when said with a French accent and won't sound as pretty when said with an English intonation.

mejon · 01/07/2012 13:36

It is a Welsh name and a French name though prn. differently. I like it - simple, easy to spell and pronounce.

PepperOnMyPaprikash · 01/07/2012 14:12

Thanks for your responses. Yes it is French as well as Welsh. I'm not sure about the Muppets connection! Or being called Mark. Hmm - some things to think about - thank you all.

It's the name of a Jackie Collins character (trash holiday read admission )
I do like it though!

minipie · 01/07/2012 17:53

I think of the ballet Manon - the main character (Manon) has a terribly tragic time and then dies, I think, so that would put me off a bit! Pretty name though.

Bunbaker · 01/07/2012 18:01

I also thought of Manon des Sources. I loved the Marcel Pgnol books and films.

Is it pronounced the French way?

OlympicFlame · 01/07/2012 18:05

I know quite a few late 30s Manons. All Welsh incidentally.

I'm not a huge fan. But it's a million times better than Seren (IMO) which has taken off bug style for some reason.

OlympicFlame · 01/07/2012 18:05

It's pronounced as its spelt Man-on.

BelleStar · 01/07/2012 20:19

I don't know the Welsh version but familiar with the French. I'm case it matters I believe it's currently one of the top (as in most used) girl's names in France. I really like it!

BelleStar · 01/07/2012 20:20

*in, not I'm!

ggirl · 01/07/2012 20:22

Purplecatti · 08/07/2012 01:22

DottieRose · 09/07/2012 21:33

Lottapianos · 09/07/2012 21:35
