Has anyone ever told you that your DCs have a pets name?

This happened to us and it really took me aback. I suppose the name is quite widely used for pets but it is a human name - that's just been hijacked by pet owners! Has anyone else had this and how did you feel about it?

I've never had anyone say it to me, but I'll admit I've often thought it when somebody has told me their DC's name is Oscar, Felix, Jasper, Dexter, Rex, Marmaduke, Monty - which were all very popular DC names where we used to live

I dunno whether people round our way when I was a kid were just ahead of the trend in naming their cats, but to me, all of the above will always make me think of cats. Great names, though. Sorry to anybody who has one - though I'm sure my opinion in neither here nor there anyway!

feetheart · 28/06/2012 11:15

Oh yes - the only time we have heard DD's name (or a slightly shortened version of it) when it hasn't belonged to an older lady it has been a dog's name.
Dd is 9, loves her name because it isn't common and thinks the dog connection is funny :)

HTH

Aworryingtrend · 28/06/2012 11:21

I would never say it but have often thought it about many of the names Divine listed: Felix, Jasper, Dexter, Marmaduke etc.

passivehoovering · 28/06/2012 11:23

oh God, I have said it to someone. I still wake up in the middle of the night in a sweat thinking of my stupidity.

Pipsqueak99 · 28/06/2012 11:40

Not my DC, but when we moved into our previous house it transpired that our cat had the same name as our next door neighbour. And weirdly , he owned a cat with the same name as myself.
Goodness only knows what the other neighbours thought when we were calling them in at night Shock

Pipsqueak99 · 28/06/2012 11:41

And yes, one of the first things I said to him was "our cats called G". :o

Chloe55 · 28/06/2012 16:54

Yes and my ds's name is one of the one's divine listed Grin However, the name was very much a human name first!

saoifre · 28/06/2012 19:56

it would be so rude and ignorant to do that.

workshy · 28/06/2012 20:00

friend of mine was looking at seaside tat mugs etc with names on and said to her DS 'we never find anything with your name on do we'

the shop assistant overheard and asked what his name was

friend replied with one of the names in the list above and the woman in the shop said.....

have you tried the pet shop?!!!

WTF?

BorisJohnsonsHair · 28/06/2012 20:09

My friend's wife and dog are both called Sam Hmm

arya7weasley · 28/06/2012 20:13

I have to admit I thought (not said!) "My 'X' has a dog called..." when I came across a Buster and then a Chester Hmm
However the trend is for giving pets 'human' names ... Holly...Jasper etc not the other way round. My two (dogs) are Tommy and Daisy (they were already named when we got them).
So, unless your DCs name is Whiskers or Paws it really is quite rude to not hide that reaction OP.

Badgerina · 28/06/2012 21:04

Yes. Apparently Oscar is a dog's name. Hmm

I usually smile and say "Yeah I know. That's why I chose it".

DS2 is due in September. He will be either Spike, or Felix. PROOF right there, that I do it DELIBERATELY Grin

TheWalkingDead · 28/06/2012 21:12

DS1 is one of the names that Divine listed, and my ex-boss said the same. It never popped into my head that it would be a name for a dog, as I've never heard of anyone ever having a dog named this.

Booette · 28/06/2012 22:07

Yes. DS5 is Barney. It's a very popular dogs name!

applepieinthesky · 28/06/2012 22:07

Yes I know a little boy called Milo and I always think it sounds more like a pets name. In fact my auntie used to have a cat called Milo.

wigglybeezer · 28/06/2012 22:12

We decided against naming DS 3 Rory as it was next doors dog's name, he ended up with a name I like much less and the dog died prematurely shortly afterwards. I wish I had followed my instincts about what I liked and what would suit DS , which is all you should think about when naming babies IMO.

scentednappyhag · 28/06/2012 22:14

Yep, my DSIL's friend said she'd never heard DD's name for a person, only dogs.
Until now then, you daft woman Grin

Catsmamma · 28/06/2012 22:14

badgerina...youare being ridiculous, everyone knows Oscar is a cat name!

I once dealt with a very annoying woman who was making an appointment for her son who imo had the MOST ridiculous name one would ever give to an actual boy child. She insisted on spelling everything she told me, the street name, the area name, the city name....her surname and the child's surname. All were perfectly simple normal words.

Finally as she commenced spelling the child's name I snapped "yes, I can manage thanks, my cat is called that"

em, ay, arr, cee, ee, ell in case you were wondering. :D

I know someone with a cat called dave and my parents used to ave a dog called Gary........come on these are people names!

My dh does have a name used by the owners of wee west highland terriers in Scotland Wink

BeehavingBaby · 28/06/2012 22:18

My nephew is Rufus, and for years I had a mental block with it and kept nearly writing Bruno on cards because I just had 'dog name' in my head. I was desperate to call DD1 Suki so I can hardly talk!

Catsmamma · 28/06/2012 22:18

AND btw why do people with awkward surnames never spell them out until you ask

Davis ...."is that with an is or ies??" you ask, and they scowl and say one as if you should be a bleeding mind reader and how dare you query the spelling.

and don't get me started on the the Mcs and fucking macs ....never met one who was helpful.

5madthings · 28/06/2012 22:29

yes i have an Oscar and have been told its a cats name.

my sister named her baby Caspar and we had a cat as children called casper so same name, different spelling, she had forgotten about the cat tho!

workshy · 28/06/2012 22:30

ah but Davis and Davies are pronounced differently

I always spell my name and it's spelt how it sounds but people are always sticking a G in the middle for some reason, or changing a D for a B or a U for an O

and anyone with the same surname no knows exactly what I am called

Catsycat · 28/06/2012 22:36

One kind person told me DD1's name was a dogs name. She is called Zara Confused!!!???? I found out recently that another mum I know used to have a dog called Zara too, but she has been too polite to ever mention that to me :) To be fair, I do always think Rufus = dog and Felix / Jasper = cat, but would never say that to the parents, and realise they were person names first, so I am the unreasonable one!
