(am regular with a different name for this)

I went to the park with dd and pretended she was called the name we were thinking of for this baby if it is also a dd.

Clemency, come here, I said.

Clemency put the dog shit down, I shouted.

We're going home now Clemency, I mumbled because I started getting odd looks.

And I felt like an utter twat. I love this name though - does it mean it's doomed?? Perhaps we should go for our play it safe second choice (Anna).

I much prefer Anna.

missmiss · 28/06/2012 07:33

I love Clemency, it's on my list for a girl. Anna is fine but...meh.

PurplePidjin · 28/06/2012 08:07

What about Annecy??

missingmymarbles · 28/06/2012 09:42

I'll read the whole thread in a minute, but did you not just feel like a twat because you were shouting an imaginary child rather than the name Grin?

pictish · 28/06/2012 09:44

I like it...but I think that personally it would start to irritate me as time went by.

What about Faraday?

pictish · 28/06/2012 09:44

I like Annecy too.

pictish · 28/06/2012 09:46

Oh and I will always make a 'aaahhh' noise at hearing that a little baby girl is called Anna. It's a clasically pretty name.

TheMightyMojoceratops · 28/06/2012 09:48

Don't you plead for clemency when you're about to be sentenced by a judge? Seriously, google "plead for clemency" and see if you still like it.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 28/06/2012 09:57

clemency
annecy why would you name someone annecy?
faraday same question, Confused

PurplePidjin · 28/06/2012 10:02

Mousquetaire, same reason as calling them Florence, Paris, Dakota...

pictish · 28/06/2012 10:03

Why not?

There's no rule says a name has to be listed in the Official Book Of Proper Names is there?

If ds1 had been a girl we would have called her Suilven after a mountain up north. By the time I'd actually had a girl, it didn't fall in with the boys names, so we chose something else...but I think anything goes so long as it's not derogatory.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 28/06/2012 10:07

No, no rules, it is just not a nice name, nice town though!

WowOoo · 28/06/2012 10:23

I prefer Anna.

I think because I've known and know some gorgeously nice Ann, Anna and Anne's.

But the Clemency I know has a mother who is a horrible lady who is bringing up a spoilt brat.

It's a shame how one bad association can tarnish something for me.

Am sure yours will be the LOVELY Clemency and I wouldn't give you odd looks!!

Ephiny · 28/06/2012 11:44

I prefer Anna. No it's not the most imaginative choice, but it's a beautiful classic name, and simple but feminine.

Clemency is OK, but to me seems a bit awkward for everyday use, and Clem/Clemmie are just horrible.

BeattieBow · 28/06/2012 11:47

I really loved Clemency and wanted to call dd now 6 weeks that. dh vetoed it.

(I must say I love the name, but did have slight reservations about the meaning attached to it).

I had Anna on my list too, but also had reservations that it is a bit safe tbh. I ended up calling my dd Cecily which I think is lovely.

shepherdsdelight · 28/06/2012 11:51

Clemency mmmm - quite pretty, but I prefer Anna

yellowflowers · 28/06/2012 12:10

I think the meaning is great. What's wrong with a name that means leniency and justice and mercy?

I always find it odd when someone comes here saying what do you think of these two normal names and others come on and say 'hmmm what about this weird unusual one'

BeattieBow · 28/06/2012 12:15

I suggested Cecily because I seem to have similar taste to the OP (given that i really wanted to call my dd Clemency but dh didn't like it and I just couldn't persuade him and also because I had Anna on my list) and wondered if she would like it.

yellowflowers · 28/06/2012 15:55

Sorry not you Beattiebow. I was more raising an eyebrow at faraday and Annecy!

SoupDragon · 28/06/2012 16:07

Clemency is awful not to my taste. I really don't like "virtue" type names.

And ti sounds really poncey. But each to their own :o It doesn't fail any of my personal "do not be so bloody cruel to your child" tests.

SparkleFever · 28/06/2012 17:12

I'm with RubyFakeNails, isn't Clemency something granted to convicts?

ginghamfish · 28/06/2012 17:15

Clemency is beautiful. Who cares what the people in the park think. Did you like what their children were called? Call your children what you want, Clemency is a beautiful beautiful name and you'll be mad as hell at yourself if you don't call a child that because of a trip to the park.

Ephiny · 30/06/2012 08:19

I think the meaning is fine, isn't it one of those 'virtue names' - Clemency is mercy and forgiveness?

Personally I just don't love it as an actual name though!

Booette · 30/06/2012 10:34

Clemency is lovely.

They were probably giving you strange looks because they were thinking what a naughty child your DD was completely ignoring you every time you called her!

MoonHare · 01/07/2012 20:36

Really dislike clemency as a name, for me it's a word to describe something shown to criminals - life instead of the death penalty for example.

The daughter of the St Aubyn's who live at St Michaels Mount in Cornwall is called Clemency. So it seems there's at least one extremely wealthy family who do not agree with me.
