Meredith? Boy or Girl?

We're still searching for names for DD1 (baby due any day now), and came across this one, which DH loves (along with Merryn). I like it, but am aware that traditionally it is a boys name in Wales, and as we holiday/visit in Wales fairly regularly I'm a bit worried about giving a boys name to a girl!

So to anyone Welsh or who lives in Wales - would it be really weird to name a girl Meredith, or has it made the transfer to unisex/girls name in Wales the same as it has in England and overseas?

New to me, I had no idea it was traditionally a boys name, I would have considered it an exclusively feminine name.

SilentMammoth · 23/06/2012 19:23

Lovely for both

Allthesanityinme · 23/06/2012 19:26

I was aware that it is also a boys name but I definitely associate it more as a female name

KatieScarlett2833 · 23/06/2012 19:27

Girl, nn Merry round here.

I like it.

5madthings · 23/06/2012 19:36

i think of it as a girls name and it was one on my list for my dd, who is called Merryn, so you have lovely taste in names! :)

I went to uni with a male Meredith..he did pretty well with the ladies and in fact he was pretty cool.

I like it.

tammy234 · 23/06/2012 20:49

Meredith doesn't sound very feminine at all, so I can see it working well for a boy.

Merryn, on the other hand, is very feminine to my ears.

thegreylady · 23/06/2012 21:24

To me it is a girl's name and a lovely one at that.

mejon · 23/06/2012 21:41

I'm Welsh and it is more of a boy's name to me - though I'd use the spelling Meredydd for a first name.

PointyDogs · 23/06/2012 21:47

not sure Meredydd would work in England mejon, even though it is a lovely spelling :) Would prob get pronounced merry-died or something!

I only know boys with it in Wales but have heard it used as a girls name. What about Mererid which is similar. Both lovely names whichever you chose.

MerryMarigold · 23/06/2012 21:55

I nearly had Meredith (for a girl) and wished I had! I love it.

EightiesChick · 23/06/2012 21:56

I would think of it predominantly as a girl's name. It's nice.

FfoFfycsecs · 23/06/2012 22:01

I'm Welsh too, and considered Meredydd for a boy (it's the name of a brilliant folk singer, Maredydd Evans), but decided against it as I thought everyone would say "Meredith?! That's a girl's name!" :o

mejon · 23/06/2012 23:18

FfoFfycs - Grin. BTW wyt ti wedi newid dy enw yn ddiweddar? Wedi gweld bod ti'n byw yn y canolbarth - ydy'n llwybrau wedi croesi o'r blaen?

FfoFfycsecs · 24/06/2012 12:01

Do, dwi'n newid f'enw pob chwe wythnos! A 'da ni wedi "cyfarfod" yma o'r blaen... :)
