Heulwen is Welsh for sunshine.
Alaw means melody.

tara0202 · 19/06/2012 14:26

Zuva means sunshine in shona language (an African language). My friend who is from Zimbabwe has a gorgeous dd called Zuva.

Lucie means 'light'. From the old French and orignally from Lucia.

bohemimum · 19/06/2012 14:32

Jyoti is Sanskrit for light. Pretty name.

mrstowers · 19/06/2012 14:43

According to Greek Mythology Theia/Thea/Thia was the Titan Goddess of heavenly light. Her symbol is the eyes or glasses.

If you type light into Think Baby Names 65 come up!

Think Ilona is my favorite.

EBDTeacher · 19/06/2012 14:58

Four for 'vision'

Aisling
Fatima
Moriah (wasn't that where the Dwarves lived in Lord of the Rings?)
Roya

Not so keen on any of them.

javotte · 19/06/2012 15:53

Erm... Cecily / Cecilia means "blind".

33goingon64 · 19/06/2012 16:32

Phoebe means shining light

Frontpaw · 19/06/2012 16:51

How long before we have our first little 'OliviaMumsnet' christened?

AbsofAwesomeness · 19/06/2012 16:56

Claire/Clair is light in French, and Helen is light in/derived from Greek
Ora is light in Hebrew (if it's a girl's name)

saoifre · 19/06/2012 18:48

quite a number of Irish names carry those meanings eg:
Aine (splendor, radiance, brilliance);
Aoife (beautiful, radiant, joyful);
Ashling (vision or dream);
Radha (vision);
Sorcha (bright, radiant, light)

Aurora

ghosteditor · 19/06/2012 20:47

Hester is 'star' in ancient Greek, I believe.

CoteDAzur · 19/06/2012 20:49

I think the Greek work for star is something like "aster". ("Disaster" = "bad star", as in bad luck Smile)

How about Astrid?

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 19/06/2012 21:04

LOVE Hester, another one DP was having none of. Grr.

in the same vane -

Astrid
Estelle
Celeste

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 19/06/2012 21:06

iirc (and I might not) Hester is Persian in origin and means star

Springforward · 19/06/2012 21:10

Pheobe (I think, can't remember why!)
Clare/ Claire/ Clair /Clara

WestWinger · 19/06/2012 21:16

Cecilia (French origin so an accent on the e) means 'one of the shining light'. She was also the patron saint of music.

Without the accent, it is derived from a Roman family name, which in itself was derived from the Latin word caecus (which means blind). So no, Cecilia doesn't actually mean blind.
