Just want peoples thoughts on the above names...I didn't realise how hard it is to decide! I want a girly/pretty name which is unusual but not completely out there! Thanks!

Hi, OP.

Lola is a Marmite name. Lots of people will love it; lots of other people will tell you it's a strippers' name. Bear that one in mind.

Maisy is cute but I don't think I, as an adult woman, would want people to find my name cute. Personally, I like versatile names that lend themselves to nicknames suitable for all ages. Let's take Catherine as an example: Kitty as a baby, Katie as a child, Kate as an adult, Catherine on a business card. Or Elizabeth: Libby, Lizzie, Liz.

But to get back to your original question - if you want a name that is unusual but not completely out there, neither Lola nor Maisy is it. Both are very trendy and while your daughter is unlikely to be one of 5 in her class with either name, she'll blend in with all the Mollys and Daisys. From what you say, that's not what you want so keep thinking.

I'm not sure if you were looking for suggestions but, in case you are, you might want to consider the following fitting in yet standing out names:

Bryony
Celia
Cecilia
Cecily
Dinah
Emma
Felicity
Georgia or Georgina
Helena
Hope
Flora
Iris
Ivy
Jessica and Jessamine - Jess & Jessie
Josephine - Josie, Posey
Louisa - Lula, Lulu
Meredith or Merryn
Pearl
Sadie
Susannah
Tessa
Victoria

I've included some of the nicknames you could use but you might think that some of them are substantial enough to use in their own right.

Some you might want to avoid if you want something that sounds fresh:

  1. 'Belle' names: Mabel, Isabel, Isabella, Arabella, Annabel, etc.
  1. 'Ellie' names: Ellie, Elodie, Eleanor, Ellen, Eloise, etc.
  1. Milly, Tilly, Molly, Polly, Holly-type names
  1. Most flower names but Rose, Lily and Poppy are the ones that spring to mind
  1. Eva, Eve, Ava, Evelyn

If you like any of those sort of names, unusual is not what you're looking for!

Maisy, my dd grandmother is called Maisie and it definitely does not seem like a babyish name.

TuesdayNightClub · 18/06/2012 19:50

Maisie is lovely (prefer that spelling) and I know both old and young Maisies.

I have to agree with Stellan neither Lola or Maisy are 'unusual'. IMHO I really don't like Lulu or Maisy, they seem to me, a bit unfinished but that's just me, i'm fussing like that Grin I do know a lovely Maisy, it just a name I wouldn't pick.

I know a Louise nn Lulu and a Margaret who's Maisy. I think it's nice to have the option.

To add to Stellan list, I know a Suzannah who's Zanna for short. Which I think it quite cool.

jaffacakehips · 18/06/2012 19:55

What about Meg or Maggie?

StepOutOfSpring · 18/06/2012 20:02

Maisy is very pretty :)

Not keen on Lola.

Just to add - I know a Laura who goes by Lola. It's an option if you would like to give her a classic name and aren't keen on Dolores!

Lunarlyte · 19/06/2012 11:21

My vote is for Lola :)

FirCough · 19/06/2012 12:44

Louisa is a classic but currently not over-popular name. Lends itself to a number of nns including Lola.

I agree Lola does have connotations for some people (it's also very close to the French slang 'lolos' meaning boobs), so I think I'd avoid bestowing it as an official name.
