What do you all think to Genevieve

Baby no 3 is on its way, we already have a Matty and an Eloise, I want something pretty and feminine for a girl. Middle name will be Elizabeth which is a family name.

Love! I have a couple of friends called Genevieve and they are lovely girls.

Will you go with the English or French pronunciation?

kickingKcurlyC · 17/06/2012 11:24

My first thought was that it's a bit long with Elizabeth.

JoanOfNark · 17/06/2012 12:00

jen-er-veeve or jhon-vee-ev?

DessieLou · 17/06/2012 12:27

I had a dream the other night we named our baby Genny/Genevieve (a name we've not even considered) so you get a yes from me! Grin

EmmaCate · 17/06/2012 12:47

I really love it. If she finds it too much it can also be shortened to a more conventional Jenny/Ginny.

But I sincerely hope anyone bestowed with such a beautiful name would not find it an embarrassment.

Perhaps people have a point about length with Elizabeth... it's alright with mine TBH, Emma, or perhaps Martha, Enid, Maud (on a Worst Witch tangent here), Edith.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 17/06/2012 17:49

Thanks ladies, I love it but wasnt sure if it was a bit ott. Looks like its pretty well received. Since it will almost certainly be shortened I will do it myself to one I like, Vivi is very pretty. I would pronounce it more the English way than the French, but probably softer on the G more of a j really. Only other option we have for a middle name is Faith, as that's what got us here. (thanks Jesus!)

Genevieve Elizabeth is lovely - not too long at all. Nicely balanced IMO.

Something doesn't sound quite right in Genevieve Faith, I think it's the v and then the th. Stick to your guns x

nizlopi · 17/06/2012 19:43

jollster, I'm honestly curious, what would be too long for you? That name is 18 letters in length!

BadNails · 17/06/2012 19:45

I have a Genevieve! I adore the name, naturally. I pronounce it both ways depending on my mood. She also gets called Gen, Vivi and Gigi. I'm waiting to see what sticks :)

Genevieve Elizabeth sounds lovely, never would've thought of that as a middle name because of the length but it's rather beautiful.

LucieMay · 17/06/2012 19:46

It sounds lovely but will probably constantly be misspelt.

tigrou · 17/06/2012 19:50

My first reaction was Fab.U.Lous ! Love it. But actually I read it and hear it with the French pronunciation - kind of Gen-vee-ev with a soft G. I don't like the ENglish prn as much, but it's still a pretty great name.

justtryingtodomybest · 17/06/2012 19:56

Just for anyone who was wondering about the film - it is a great film, perfect rainy Sunday afternoon viewing.

I also think it's a beautiful name - so graceful and elegant

DontmindifIdo · 17/06/2012 20:04

Oh I love it soooo much! It's been on my list since we had DS (2 1/2 now). When we first decided to start trying again for DC2 I mentioned it to DH, he thinks it sounds too 'posh' and 'try hard' - and to scupper it, he let me drink a bottle of wine (before got pg - no need to step into your judgy pants) and then said if I could spell it then it could be the name. I couldn't - got the 'i' and 'e' the wrong way round.... Still, the name we can agree on is Eloise, so we obviously have similar tastes!

Greythorne · 17/06/2012 20:09

I love it but was vetoed by DH who is French as in France it is an unfashionable 'old lady name'.
Think Ethel or Edna rather than a trendy old lady name.

But it is beautiful IMHO and I am envious you are using it :)

TwllBach · 17/06/2012 20:15

I love it too OP, it's beautiful Grin

BerryLellow · 17/06/2012 20:18

Pretty

EvilTwins · 17/06/2012 20:22

I like it! I have a friend whose DD is Genevieve with NN Evie. Didn't actually realise her full name WAS Genevieve at first- thought she was Evelyn.

randomimposter · 17/06/2012 20:53

Nizlopi, my mum was Genevieve Bernadette Mary Theresa (confirmation) so I guess we just do long names... Grin
My 2 names are 14 letters.

I'd never thought of them as long before, and wouldn't think of counting letters :). It's unusual that you actually say the whole name very often anyway... unless you're a serial bigamist?

CotedePablo · 17/06/2012 21:30

I love it, and with Elizabeth...totally gorgeous.

heartmoonshadow · 17/06/2012 21:31

I love it but DH vetoed it - if your other half fine go for it.

lou4791 · 17/06/2012 21:40

Beautiful but strong. Love it.

SoozyWoozy · 17/06/2012 21:44

My friend has a Genevieve (Evie as nn), when she first announced it I was a bit Hmm but it has grown on me. I still find it very difficult to spell though!

beesnthings · 18/06/2012 18:29

I have a Genevieve Elizabeth, who is now 26 Grin

We had loads of people say "she'll be Genny at school" but she never was. Everybody called her Genevieve right from the word go. We had some interesting pronounciations from her younger brothers as they came along.

She found her own NN at 15 and unfortunately chose Genie. Looks nice written but is foul said. Because she changed school at 16 everyone who knew her from before that calls her Genevieve and everyone since calls her Genie. A mixed party of early and late friends was funny to eavesdrop on Grin

Soozy, spelling is easy GEN - EV - IE - VE

Anonymumous · 19/06/2012 17:00

My daughter's name has 25 letters and 11 syllables including her surname and, in my opinion, it is the most stunning and beautiful combination of names ever! :)

But Genevieve Elizabeth is rather lovely too - long girlie names are just luscious!

CakeBump · 19/06/2012 17:06

It's lovely. It was on my list too but I'm in Germany and the pronounciation is horrendous really difficult in German.

I don't think it's too long either, you really don't write your first AND middle name often.
