I like the name Martha but can't decide if it's sounds frumpy. More specifically, I think it's lovely for a baby, girl and younger woman but perhaps a bit frumpy for the older lady. I don't know if that makes sense! Your opinions are much appreciated to help me decide.

I like the name, but if you think your daughter may grow up and bit short or stocky then i would avoid it.

When i hear names like Martha, Gertrude, Magda, Barbara etc i think of a large woman IYKWIM, well actually i get a mental image of this

It's a fabulous name. I have a nearly 2 year old Martha. She is sweet and gorgeous and suits her name perfectly. We have had nothing but positive feedback on her name. Not overused either Smile

I like Martha and would use the nn Mattie.

(I was a big Doris Lessing fan and the book Martha Quest made a big impact on me when I was a teenager.)

I was expecting Deirdre when you said frumpy. I quite like Martha but don't love it.

I know a few little girl Marthas, and one 25yr old - who tends to be known as Marf. I like it. I think it can sound both "round and bouncy" for a little one and quite slim and sophisticated for someone older.

No, I don't find Martha at all frumpy. Edna is, though.

whenyouseeitwaveorcheer · 11/06/2012 18:54

Frumpy.

But isn't it the name of a washer woman from the bible or something (failed RE student, sorry)? So not really glam associations.

Sheilathegreat · 11/06/2012 18:56

Gorgeous name. I think of Martha's as creative and effortlessly cool. No way frumpy! Smile

Pochemuchka · 11/06/2012 18:56

No, not frumpy at all!
I think it is sweet for a baby/young girl and quite cool/sort of 'alternative' for a teenager. I think it goes well into adulthood too.
I think of Martha Wainwright who isn't frumpy and has a great name!

love Martha. It is kind of old fashioned and but I really like it. Sadly DH has said NO to this. But then he has said NO to every single bloomin' suggestion I've made for the next baby. So, I'm still hoping I might be able to wear him down....

CharlieBoo · 11/06/2012 20:57

Love Martha, not frumpy at all

SLVC · 11/06/2012 21:05

Love it. Was on the girl list when I had DS. In my mind Martha is an elegant, slightly hippy girl. The opposite of frump.

Booette · 11/06/2012 21:58

It's not frumpy, I love it! It would have been on my list if DH didn't say th as ff!

yellowflowers · 11/06/2012 23:20

Love it

It sounds frumpy to me. But maybe it's a generation thing? If there were a Maria, Anna and a Martha, I would feel a bit sorry for Martha (getting the 'plain girl' name). But that's just me! Lots use it.

Mabel, Celia, Margaret are similar types of names (to my ear), and lots of people think they're cool. (I'm just a bit boring Grin.

smother · 12/06/2012 10:35

as others have said, martha is a cool, elegant, gentle name, perhaps a little hippyish around the edges.... but if you're having doubts, don't use it!

Unionjackie · 12/06/2012 12:41

Lovely and not at all frumpy.
