Do you have a name that is often mispronounced?

...And does it annoy you? Or do people frequently mispronounce your DC's name?

I really like the name Louis for a boy. But I am wondering if we, and then him, are going to spend the rest of his life having to correct people when they pronounce his name with an 's' on the end... Are we condemning our future DS to a life of being irritated every time someone says his name wrong?

I know two Louis, both spelt this way and there has never been a problem with prononciation. I think this spelling is very common so everyone knows how to pronounce it correctly.

My name gets spelled and mispronounced all the time - the annoying thing is that people spell their name the same way as mine and (imvvvvho) mispronounce it which leads to some of the confusion. I have never understood why my name is pronounced in two ways when names with a different first letter but the same last three letters are NEVER pronounced in two different ways... (apols if that makes no sense!)

It does annoy me - telling people your name 4 times and then having them pronounce it incorrectly - and as a result I'm always very careful about how I spell and pronounce other people's names and I gave both my dc names that are hard to get wrong.

Amie - I had a similar thing - one of my teachers thought I was trying to sound fancy by pronouncing my name the way I did, her blushes at parents night when my parents set her straight were a happy moment for me...

Yes, people get my first name wrong all the time as they misread it, mix up two of the letters and it results in a different name.

Sometimes I haven't bothered to correct them and people have known me for ages getting it wrong.

All the time- amazingly different ways, wildly different ways! There are about 3 basic ways I hear it pronounced, but people get quite creative. Some slip extra syllables in, suffixes, say a pseudo-rhyming name beginning with a completely different letter. Not intentionally, that's just what they hear. And the spellings...

You know what though? I love it. I get tremendous, perverse pleasure saying "Actually, it's MarmaLERT." The people that matter will learn the name, don't worry.

Mines not hard, but along the lines of Clara. So get called Sara, Lara , Carla, flora, Sarah, Sara etc etc

My name is pronounced how it's written but people still can't do it, or say "oh I know a xxx and a xxx (similar names but not my name) but not your name". How utterly fascinating. Like me saying to Catherine's oh I know a Kate and I know a Catalina, but not yours.

I shorten it now but even that is a ball ache as they spell the shortened version wrong and I feel like a twit for asking for it to be spelt differently i.e. not a mans name!

I have searched on here for my name and laughed at the comments about it being old fashioned and awful and how they'll grow up bullied etc. :)

my name is always pronounced wrong and spelled wrong, i have had to spell it out to everyone i meet! its very annoying, although i don't blame them , i blame my parents for giving me a dreadful name!

I have a very common Irish name, which is often mis-spelled and mis-pronounced here. I'd find it easier to forgive if it wasn't for the fact that it's also the name of a famous and controversial Irish singer, so surely most people over the age of thirty would be familiar with how it's said and written, as she's been in the headlines so many times, even if you're not into her music?

More depressingly, my parents can't pronounce my newborn baby's ordinary, phonetically spelled name! It begins with a 'Th' and they keep pronouncing it 'T', however much I correct them. And that's the shortened nickname we are using when he's a baby - they keep mispronouncing the full name, by getting the 'Th' wrong and misplacing the emphasis. Grr. And this is a phonetically spelled Biblical name - nothing fancy, oddly spelled or made-up.

My nephew is called Louis and most people pronounce it the correct, English way, Lou-is. That's also how Germans and Spaniards pronounce it - phonetically correct. And the citizens of St Louis in the US.

Just because the French don't pronounce their 's's at the end of words, Louis becomes Lou-ee. But you really can't accuse an English (or German or Spanish) speaker of MIS-pronouncing Louis by pronouncing it Lou-is imo.

My middle name is a Jewish spelling. If I say it, people spell it wrong. If I write it down they pronounce it wrong. Not a common spelling though

First name (Danielle) gets pronounced danni - ell a lot when it's dan - yell. And I always gets things addresses to Mrs Daniel X

If you're worried about mis-pronunciations, I'd avoid the name Louis because most English speakers will pronounce it as it is written: Lou-is. If you were French living in France, then you should expect it to be pronounced without the s.

Many names get pronounced differently in other languages. With dh being half German we tried to pick names that sound the same in both languages.

All of the rage in this thread should be copied and pasted every time someone posts a "should I name my child [something pronounced completely differently to how it is spelled, or a name in another language with letters pronounced differently in English... I am looking at you, non-Irish Irish-namers!]"

My Welsh name is beautiful but always mispronounced. I chose a simple, correctly spelt, (and, imho, beautiful) name for DD1 so she doesn't have to go through life listening to peoples pitiful attempts to say her name.

Can I just ask. Is Mirian a name, because I get that one ALL. THE. TIME. and just assumed it was a mis-pronunciation/spelling.

I used to have two names that everyone seemed to struggle with. I was delighted to marry someone with a nice "easy" surname. Although, the bank managed to get it wrong on our check-book, but I believe that to be a typo - makes me giggle anyway.
