Peter or Tiernan

DH and I have kind of "settled" on Peter if DC2 is a boy but I find it hard to be inspired by boys' names.

I was just reading throught he unusual baby names thread and come across the name Tiernan. It has irish roots and DH is irish. Is it too unusual though? Would it get shortened and if so to what?

The middle name would be Michael and we already have a DS called Owen.

Which would you choose - Peter or Tiernan?

How is Tiernan pronounced?

SESthebrave · 07/06/2012 14:46

It's "Teer-nan"

Tiernan is lovely. Sounds solid, masculine and is not overused.

Peter is ok but I don't like Pete.

BiscuitNibbler · 07/06/2012 15:10

Not keen on Tiernan, and although I like Peter I can't get past the fact it means "to fart" in French.

hugebumpbelly · 07/06/2012 15:11

Tiernan for me.

SESthebrave · 07/06/2012 15:15

Oh no BiscuitNibbler - I didn't know that!! Shock
Out of interest what would be your boys names list? I'm just not feeling particularly inspired and at 40+11, we need to get this sorted!

I like Tiernan, and don't consider it to be particularly odd, but I'm Irish.

I will say this for it as an Irish name - it is anglicised, so it is easy to spell and pronounce for the English (presume you are English), and I think it's a name that works really well in English.

I agree with eva that it is solid and masculine.

I like Peter too BTW, but I think Owen and Tiernan go really nicely together.

SESthebrave · 07/06/2012 15:18

AThingIn YourLife - that's good to hear. We are living in England and my mum has spoken about how she doesn't like the idea of "a strange irish name that no one can spell".
If it's a girl, we're calling her Aoife so she'll have fun with that Grin

:o

Aoife is gorgeous, and actually very easy to say.

Spelling is another another matter if you don't speak Irish :o

squoosh · 07/06/2012 15:25

Tiernan is a surname to me.

squoosh · 07/06/2012 15:26

Having said that there was a boy called Tiernan Flynn who fingered kissed my friend at the disco when we were 14.

SESthebrave · 07/06/2012 15:27

Err... thanks for that image Squoosh !

I have a Tiernan Micheal (Irish living in the U.S.). No one has had any problems with it pronunciation-wise.
BTW I am 39weeks and if we have a boy he will be Eoghan (Owen).

squoosh · 07/06/2012 15:29

Sorry!!!! Your boy won't get up to any of that nonsense.

turtleturtleturtle · 07/06/2012 15:29

Oh and no one has really tried to shorten it, except to T. He's almost 4.

SESthebrave · 07/06/2012 15:35

turtleturtleturtle - ooh bit of a coincidence!

underthevalley · 07/06/2012 15:44

Tiernan without a doubt

SESthebrave · 07/06/2012 15:54

Right so I think it's at least worth running it by DH to see what he thinks!

OP posts:
Stellan · 07/06/2012 16:03

Peter.

I can't get beyond Tiernan sounding a) like a surname and b) beginning with 'tear', which makes me think of sadness and teardrops. It's not one for me.

StepOutOfSpring · 07/06/2012 16:21

Peter, for the same reasons as Stellan

Spottyfrog4 · 07/06/2012 16:54

Peter

SESthebrave · 08/06/2012 12:27

Ok so now DH has suggested Callum. What do you think?
I'm not sure we'd be able to have Callum Michael - too much of a mouthful? Could do Callum Peter?

OP posts:
StepOutOfSpring · 08/06/2012 12:32

Callum is quite nice, though I still prefer Peter.

Callum Michael is awkward with the m sounds running together. Callum Peter works well though, or Peter Callum?

SESthebrave · 10/06/2012 12:15

Well baby was born yesterday morning and was a girl so she is named Aoife Grace. The debate about boys names turned out to be o
Irrelevant! I think we would have gone with Callum Peter though.

Congratulations on Aoife's arrival :)
