Dorothy is lovely.
Matilda is a splendid name but I detest Tilly even for a dog. (I know 9 dogs called Tilly, how can people be so unimaginative?)
Loathe Molly.

frazzlerock · 08/06/2012 11:37

Molly's my name

I used to hate hate hate it growing up as it was an "old lady' name. Love it now but also adore Dorothy nn Dotty and Matilda nn Tilda.
Sorry, not much help.

birdofthenorth · 08/06/2012 11:48

Dorothy is gorgeous. So many lovely nicknames -Dot, Dorry, Dolly

manicinsomniac · 09/06/2012 09:28

I love Matilda
Molly is cute but not sure about an adult Molly
Dorothy is ok, I'm not sold on it yet but I think it will grow on me as it gets used more.

Love Dorothy. It is in my current top five.

sugarspiceandallthingsnice324 · 10/06/2012 20:00

What about Dorothea - i just think it is much prettier than dorothy - then you can have dottie or thea as nicknames.

NadiaWadia · 11/06/2012 17:50

Dorothy is great, very pretty. Doesn't make me think of old ladies so much as 'The Wizard of Oz'.

Besides, a few years ago people would have laughed at all the 'Florence, Ruby, Lilly, Archie, Alfie' type names and thought of them all as for OAPs. Now they are the norm.

jujak · 16/06/2012 08:42

I like Dorothea but our surname begins with an 'A' so not sure it flows well....
I go away from this forum and start getting worried about calling her Dorothy and then i read your lovely responses and it gives me the courage again to go with it...Thanks everyone Smile

Matilda is lovely.

Kaekae · 16/06/2012 16:12

No don't like Dorothy, reminds me of The Wizard of Oz. It seems fashionable now to find the ugliest old lady name possible. Like Matilda though!

Staceisace · 16/06/2012 19:05

I like Dot/Dotty but not Dorothy on a baby but I guess it'd be good for her to have options when she's older. I still know a lot of Dorothys who are friends of my grandparents so that's probably why I'm not massively keen.

Matilda is my favourite of the three but I realise that's pretty popular right now.

HandMadeTail · 16/06/2012 19:09

I hate Molly. It's a diminutive of Margaret. It's not a name.

Matilda is cute, and has great historical associations, but is a bit popular, at the moment.

So Dorothy, by elimination. Think of Dorothy Parker, and not MIL.

CaipirinhasAllRound · 16/06/2012 19:20

The thought that she might get called Potty Dotty, Grotty Dotty or Spotty Dotty at school would be me off Dorothy

StrawbRhi · 17/06/2012 01:05

Wow, never realised how out of favour Molly was until now! My daughter is Mollie, named after her Grandmother Molly. Havent heard of another one, but get lots of compliments when out and about.

If the search is still on Id throw my vote in for Dorothy, esp shortened to Dottie. Matilda is equally gorgeous but is becoming quite popular.

FairLadyRantALot · 17/06/2012 01:15

Out of the 3 Matilda is my favourite :)

[Sceptical] I ve spent the day being unsure about Dorothy again...I do worry its too old. We have a little boy called George though so do feel it would go well together. If we ask him what he wants his baby sister to be called he always chooses Molly..... Just want something different though but not too different...This is so hard...have 4 weeks (hopefully less!) left to decide....! Confused

Heh, forgot to mention in my post that we've chosen George as our boys name if we're lucky enough to have one. Mollie and George go very well together.

Stellan · 18/06/2012 16:37

jujak - If you go with Dorothy, you could nickname her Dotty or Dolly. Dolly might appease your little boy - it's almost like Molly!

I really like Dorothy but then again I love The Wizard of Oz!
