Mia: timeless or trendy?

Mia seems very of the moment (esp in UK and Australia +/- USA, slightly less so in Canada), but I know it's been a around for a long time. What are people's thoughts????? Will it be the Jennifer of the 70's???

I know two. One at baby rhyme time- about 4 years old and one who is the daughter of a swedish friend who is 12. I like it alot- I think timeless.

Lorqueen has a certain elegance, granted!

DogEared · 01/06/2012 08:59

Trendy.

MiseryBusiness · 01/06/2012 09:53

I know a few adult Mia's and a couple of teenage Mia's and quite a lot of under 8's that are Mia's.

I like the name but it has become very trendy.

Iwillorderthefood · 01/06/2012 09:59

I agree with a previous poster regarding using it as a nn for Amelia. Do not like Maia though as for me it just looks as if you are trying too hard to avoid Mia.

It's a pretty name but I know of quiet a few under 10.

Iwillorderthefood · 01/06/2012 10:00

Quite....

ArthurandGeorge · 01/06/2012 10:02

Trendy

AllRiseForHerVaj · 01/06/2012 10:02

I think Mia is classic, Maia/Mya/Maya more trendy, but still nice.

I love Mia as a nn for Maria.

kickingKcurlyC · 01/06/2012 10:29

Trendy.

Stellan · 01/06/2012 10:59

I think the only way of working out whether it is timeless or trendy is to ask yourself: do I know any adult Mias? If the answer is no, it's probably trendy.

Stellan · 01/06/2012 11:02

If you look Mia up on names.darkgreener.com/, you can see that it went from being ranked #116 in 1996 to peaking at #11 in 2008/9. And it hasn't left the top 15 since 2003.

Big spike? Alarm bells should be ringing that it is a trendy name.

PollyLove · 01/06/2012 18:08

It's my DDs middle name, my DP wanted it for her first name but I wasn't really struck because of how trendy it is.

goodygumdrops · 01/06/2012 18:10

Beautiful name.

There are 2 Mias in my daughter's nursery (and a Mya and a Mai!) I would say very trendy, have never met an adult one. Also disagree that it is timeless as a nickname for Amelia - Amelia is even more trendy in my experience!

CharlieBoo · 01/06/2012 21:02

Trendy

PogoBob · 01/06/2012 21:07

I love the name but felt it was a little too soft for DD (can't think of a better way of describing it - DD has never been petite so we felt she needed a stronger name!)

Used it as a middle name instead.

Lannie33 · 14/06/2012 16:43

Thanks everyone for your thoughts!!! Really appreciate it. Seems to be much more common in the UK than where I am in Canada (it made the top 25 list for the first time in 2010: it was #17 in 2010 and 2011). Here Maya/Maia is more common. I know one grandmother named Mia, one who's about 36, one who's 6 and one who's 2 (and one who's 7 who lives in Australia and one who's 2 who lives in the USA who might move back to Canada). Still deciding if I should use it as first or middle name (don't like the idea of having another Mia in her class, so debating if that's likely to happen). The other (first or middle) name will be Kylie.
