Theobald

We're v early days to be thinking of this now, but ah well! Was playfully saying we might be having a boy and throwing out some boys names. Was ready for a "heated debate" in the future about names as dh wanted an Irish name and/or french name for "family tradition" reasons and I'm not so keen. Anyone it was a no from him to Felix, Hugo, Leo..
then I suggested Theo and he is now extremely taken with the name Theobald (Theo for short) as it is the name of a historical hero of his. Now much as I'm happy he's been diverted away from the french name idea (they're all a bit frilly aren't they) - I'm really v unsure about Theobald! What do you think?

I think it's lovely! Theo's a great nick name!

hugebluebump · 29/05/2012 21:43

I think Theobald is lovely but it would be shame to shorten to Theo - there are so many little Theos out there already.

There are some lovely French names imo.

I can't think of that many french boy's names that I like. Maybe Sebastien, shortened to Seb... The percentage of baby that will be french is really rather low (an eighth!) so anything very french would sound pretentious I think. Open to suggestions though!

Love Milo too (in addition to the names in my OP), but its not french, irish or the name of a relevant historical figure so my chances of persuading dh are low...

I like Theo, but I really don't like the "bald" bit. Much prefer Theodore.

What about Benoir?

StepOutOfSpring · 30/05/2012 00:08

Agree with Badgerina. The "bald" bit makes it sound comical. Theodore is lovely though :)

MarkGruffalo · 30/05/2012 00:13

Love Theo in its own right. Theodore better than Theobald (tut tut baldy nut if the kids at school are really mean...)

MagdalenaAlec · 30/05/2012 00:45

What about Theophile? Better than Theobald imvho. Theodore is fine too.

There were many French names flying around in the topic I started on posh/not posh/try hard names so perhaps you will find one there that you like. :)

Irish name: I am thinking of Finn or Allen/Allan (no idea what the original spelling is).

apachepony · 30/05/2012 08:32

Dh only likes theobald, not the other versions. But I agree on the bald bit! I love fionn, especially as it has links to where I'm from but friend just called her baby that, and sister has always wanted for her imaginary child! Also child is v unlikely to be fair so maybe I should leave it for the blondes! I don't think Allen is irish in particular?

It's a bit stuffy. Theo is a great name though

forevergreek · 30/05/2012 22:29

Theopold sounds better
