Love, but not keen on Catherine (or any other spelling)

What else could Kitty be short for?

Katharina
Katinka
Kirsten

I love the name and agree you can just be Kitty.

MarkGruffalo · 29/05/2012 21:33

Or double-barrel it. We have a Kitty-Clare in class and she is just lovely.

manicinsomniac · 29/05/2012 21:36

There are two Kittys in my class. One is Katherine but the other is Caitlyn

thegreylady · 29/05/2012 21:42

Kristen
Katrin

nasara · 29/05/2012 22:24

I know a Nikita with nn Kitty.

Abcinthia · 29/05/2012 22:26

I'm Katie and a few people call me Kitty or Kit. Not really a shortened version though as both are the same amount of letters Grin

But I agree that she could just be a Kitty.

MirandaGoshawk · 29/05/2012 22:27

DD has a friend who is just Kitty. A lovely name.

Bearhugs43 · 30/05/2012 06:54

I have two worries - the potential for teasing (pussy) and does it have enough solidity for adult life (e.g serious job perhaps?)

Unfounded??

DH wanted Kitty to be DD2s name, but I vetoed it precisely because of the smutty teasing potential (pussy) that could ensue in her teens/adult life.

Great idea to hyphenate the name, though, or give one of the 'full' names with Kitty as the pet name.

Lunarlyte · 30/05/2012 07:09

Also, a friend of mine said that the right name has to be one where you can imagine the child as a Doctor, Lawyer or Rock Star. If you can imagine any name working for these professions, then it is 'solid' enough. I found the rip quite useful!

HTH! X

Tip, not rip ... chucks iPhone up the wall

We have Kathleen Louisa (both mine and hubby's nan's names), she is 11 months and known everywhere drs, nursery as Kitty- I absolutely love it! still think how cool it is when said out loud. Though not that keen on it becoming too popular though so keep it quiet!

Stellan · 30/05/2012 13:07

I think it is traditionally a diminutive of Katherine/Catherine but anything similar would be an obvious choice:
Caitlin
Catalina
Caterina
Catrin
Kathleen
Katia
Katrina

Maybe another name begining with Ki: Kimberly?

Or maybe even something like: Christina or Kismet?

But if you don't like Katherine/Catherine or anything related, I'd either:

  1. Call her Kitty on the birth certificate or
  1. Call her another name you like - say, Elizabeth or Olivia or whatever it may be - and call her Kitty from birth as a nickname. That way, she's the option of using a more formal name professionally etc but has a charming family name too.
Stellan · 30/05/2012 13:16

Couple more suggestions: Charlotte? Colette? Christine? Crystal? Kirsty?

Bit of a stretch but Felicity or Felicia (since they sound like 'feline')?

Or Léonie or Leona since they mean lion?

Or Tabitha? Tabby cat > kitty kat > Kitty?

I really don't think Kitty needs to be derivative though so I'd pick my favourite 'sensible' name and go with that on the birth certificate but use Kitty as her nickname.
