Ida and Iris too similar for siblings?

Just that really, as they both begin with the I as in Eye sound are they too similar? All thoughts appreciated (and similar names appreciated!)

I would say so, yes. Both lovely names though. Do you have one of them already?

Geranium3 · 23/05/2012 21:09

definitely too similar and sound like a comedy double act, sorry!
Don't like ida and not really a fan of names with same letter or all names ending in same sound. But what about isadora or isabel or ivy?

Tricksterfrickster · 23/05/2012 21:16

I've never liked siblings with the same initial really, but I have an Iris and expecting DC2, and absolutely love Ida. I like Ada too but DP doesn't, but does quite like Ida. Elsa has always been in the top spot until my recent love of Ida!

I don't think it would be awful to have both, but i think Iris and Elsa would be better.

Or:
Iris and Ivy
Iris and Elodie
Iris and Romy
Iris and Violet
Iris and Scarlet
Iris and Heidi
Iris and Rosa
Iris and Ines

ViolaCrayola · 23/05/2012 22:28

I think they are probably too similar. Almost a tongue twister! They are both lovely though. Elsa lovely too and goes better IMO.

FashionEaster · 23/05/2012 22:38

Too similar to my ear with the repeated 'eye' sound

Iris is beautiful old lady chic but classless too. Ida/Ada is a bit belowstairs OLC

Iris & Hebe
Iris & Posy
Iris & Flora
Iris & Mabel
Iris & Nancy
Iris & Nell

Popping on to say you have lovely taste! Ida is our current first choice for our soon to arrive daughter and Iris is following closely behind Smile

I'm worried I might have a weird 'i' fetish as also like Ivy, Isadora, Ines, Ilse and Ishbel and am a fan of Ivan for a boy Blush

Sadly, I think I agree with the others and would avoid using Ida now that you have a Iris.

I think Elsa works though and as this is still a serious contender for us I thought it might be worth sharing my non-i-fetish names that DH and I reached some agreement on..
Claudia
Nina
Sybil
Rose/Rosa/Rosemary
Ruth
Naomi
Clare (maybe I have a 70s thing going on..)
Mary
Merryn
Emmeline
Robin
Romilly

Thanks Viola and Sugar for your agreement that Elsa is nice, as it looks like the general consensus is they are too similar. Damn, I love Ida!

Thanks Sugar and Fashion for your other name suggestions, there are some on your lists we've discussed and then not agreed on, it's really tricky isn't it. It's great to read other peoples thoughts of names al

Stupid phone posted too soon. As I was saying, it's great to hear names that others think are in the same field as the ones you like, in case there are any you've missed!

Teds, congratulations on your great taste!!! I too seem to love I names for some reason! I do agree though now I have an I name another doesn't really work, it's just a shame! It was funny reading your list, we obviously have very similar taste. I love Clodagh (similar to claudia) and Clara (DP doesn't!) and most of your list has been discussed at some point! I also love Meryl but DP will never agree to that either! Elsa is seeming like the only other name we agree on at the moment, although Edith has been thrown in today (by DP) which I'm not wild about yet but it does sound quite nice with Iris (but not as nice as Elsa imo!)

Thanks for all your input. If you have any other thoughts please keep them coming. Only a few more weeks to decide!

Ha, I've just realised it looks like we've moved onto E names there with Elsa and Edith!

I think Ida and Iris work together ok actually, although I have the same initial as my brother and it was sometimes a bit confusing.

upsidewide · 24/05/2012 19:06

I am not sure it matters I know a family that have a Wynnie and Wyeth and don't get the names mixed up.
In our family all the children had different sounding names (with different starting letter) and my parents always muddled us up Smile

What about Esme if you have moved to the "E" sound ... or Ethel

Tricksterfrickster · 24/05/2012 19:12

Hmmm thanks Bike and Upside, good to have more opinions. I do like Esme actually! Ethel not so much, but it may be a grower now it's in my head, thanks! I can see the names are similar in their first sound, but they don't rhyme which would be more confusing I guess.

I think Ida is beautiful. I don't think they are similar enough for it to seem silly. It is only the first letter and number of syllables that they have in common.

Tricksterfrickster · 26/05/2012 12:36

I have my hopes raised again now that they sound ok together now I've had a couple of positive comments! I guess if we do decide to go with Ida we will brace ourselves for people thinking its too similar but at least we'll be doing it knowingly! Otherwise Elsa/Edith seems most likely.
