So how posh do you have to be before you can use a name like this?

I really like it! Blush

You have to be the Mayor of Upper Poshton to use that one.

squoosh · 22/05/2012 16:01

Or a falcon.

Aworryingtrend · 22/05/2012 16:03

It is trying way too hard to be posh. people will laugh unless you positively reek of money.

Trestle · 22/05/2012 16:43

Seems to be a lot of Atticus, Quentin, Orlando, Monty etc. on MN these days so it seems extra-posh is "in"

CuppaTeaJanice · 22/05/2012 16:49

You also have to time travel to about 1890, and train your son to be a World War 1 fighter pilot. He'll need to grow a substantial moustache too!

evamummy · 22/05/2012 16:50

I know a Peregrine who goes by the nickname Perry. They're a lovely family and not particularly posh.

I think any name just becomes the person who owns it. I know boys called Quentin and Monty who, to me, are just two cheeky 7 year olds, I don't think of them as 'chav' or 'posh'. Also, most 'posh' names move down the ranks over time anyway (e.g. Sebastian was super posh only 5-10 years ago...), there's a great chapter in Freakonomics about this.

Anyway, if you like Peregrine, I'd go for it!

PoppyWearer · 22/05/2012 16:51

I know a posh, Scottish Peregrine. Suits him perfectly.

CakeBump · 22/05/2012 16:51

Oh god, please don't Sad

mayanna123 · 22/05/2012 16:53

I like Peregrine, nickname Perry.

I don't think you have to 'be' anything, you just have to be yourself. If people don't like you because they don't like your name, then it's their loss as far as I'm concerned.

Iggly · 22/05/2012 16:54

No. It's the hormones talking. Believe me.

What about Perrin instead?

mayanna123 · 22/05/2012 16:55

And, Aworryingtrend, what does money have to do with it Confused?

Do rich people, like the Beckhams, get to choose more unusual names? And the rest of us have to stick to 'normal' names?

squoosh · 22/05/2012 16:55

Trestle Peregrines across the land would have you publically flogged for lumping them in with Orlandos and Montys. Orlando and Monty become the names of mere street urchins when in the presence of the mighty Peregrine.

Monty owns a stately pile in Devon.
Peregrine owns Devon.

bronze · 22/05/2012 16:56

Have a peregrine
Then name the next one Algernon

I wish I dh had had the guts

poppydaisy · 22/05/2012 16:58

I know a Perry, which I think is short for Peregrine. He's lovely so I have good associations with the name.

(I don't like Algie/Algernon though - sounds like Algae...)

NicholasTeakozy · 22/05/2012 17:24

It's a birds name.

:o

Psammead · 22/05/2012 17:35

Fool of a Took.

Trestle · 22/05/2012 19:32

:o at "mere street urchins" squoosh

ellangirl · 23/05/2012 21:21

I know of someone called 'Grouse'. He might well own Devon.

MarySA · 23/05/2012 23:33

It's beyond dire. How thoughtless do you have to inflict a child with a name like Peregrine.

MardyBra · 23/05/2012 23:36

Please don't.

Pasiphae · 24/05/2012 10:48

I love the idea but I think it might be a tad hard to carry it off.

It's rather grandiose, you could say it was made to look elaborate on purpose and that bothers me a bit.

I guess it depends where you live.
Around mine, middle of the road names reign supreme, a Peregrine will stick out like a sore thumb so I would not "inflict" it on my boy.

But I do love that name sooo much. Would Perry not be easier to wear?

rachel234 · 24/05/2012 15:56

But Peregrine, with 3 syllables, is no longer or grander than, say, Sebastian, Theodore or Nathaniel, all of which are used fairly commonly. And I agree that Perry is a good nickname.

squoosh · 24/05/2012 16:11

Peregrine is a helluva lot grander than Theodore or Nathaniel.

There actually is no posher name in existence. Most people's reaction to Peregrine would be 'Oooooh, posh!'. Nathaniel would not elicit such a response.

Julian Fellowes son is called Peregrine. I think that says it all! Grin

blondie72 · 26/05/2012 07:52

I know one nick named Pez and he's really nice!

SiioCal · 31/05/2012 12:17

I'm sure Pippin in LOTR is Peregrine ??

Anyway yeah I like it especially Perry for short . I like Perri for a girl too .
