Erin. Just wondering as someone on here described it as a 'faux Irish' name (which I took to mean one that's made up). Does anyone know the history of Erin? It didn't seem to be around a few years ago. As far as I understand, it isn't an Irish name as such but rather the word Erin means Ireland.

I'm Irish, and agree with those who associate it with Irish American naming and a slight tackiness - and yes, for me it's overwhelmingly a brand of soup, rather than an anglicised version of Eireann.

I know an English couple who have just given this name to their new baby, who is adorable, and I have to say every time they use the name, I get this mental image of packet soup.

I'm from Ireland and Erin is increasingly popular - kind of like Evie or Eva are in England. It's a nice name and although it obviously is Irish, it seems more Irish American.
