I recently heard this name while out for dinner with friends and really liked it. It is a boys name by the way!! Is it too much like Ava? Would you mistake it for a girls name? Is it a bit unsubstantial? It's pronounced Awe vee

it's only meh imo. sounds a bit feminine.

SecretNutellaFix · 18/05/2012 16:59

I would immediately wonder if the child had a Jewish background.

ragged · 18/05/2012 17:06

People will think you said Harvey.

CherryBlossom27 · 18/05/2012 17:09

I know an Avi, he's a bit scary but very clever and direct! I think it's a very masculine name.

squoosh · 18/05/2012 17:12

I would assume it's a Jewish name.

AnnieLobeseder · 18/05/2012 17:12

It's an Israeli/Jewish name for a boy. Very common in Israel. The guy from Miami Ink (the tattoo programme) is called Avi. I know someone with an Avi, and he gets called Harvey a lot. Not a big problem in the grand scheme of things but it could get annoying.

Showmethemhappyfeet · 18/05/2012 17:14

Ob never heard it before. Looks like a girls name at first glance.
Oh and on Miani Ink he's call Ami... YumBlush

DottieRose · 18/05/2012 17:19

Actually the man I met who was called Avi was Jewish so you are right there Smile So do you thnk it is a positive, negative or irrelevant that it is Jewish name for a boy. To me that is not an issue at all.

I once shared a student house with an Israeli guy called Avi, so that is the association I would make. Otherwise I might not have known it was even a male name. By the way, this Avi called himself ah-vee not awe-vee.
Is it important? I don't know. But if you call any DC a name which is strongly associated with one cultural background you need to bear in mind that s/he might well spend years explaining to people 'no, I'm not Israeli/Welsh/Pakistani, my mum just liked the name Avi/Dafydd/Mohammed' or whatever. Would YOU find that annoying if your parents had done it to you? Or would you find it fun to be called something a bit different?

AnnieLobeseder · 18/05/2012 17:44

Quite right Showme - I stand corrected.

Darrow has it quite right - of course it shouldn't matter that the name is Israeli, but you will have to accept that a child called Avi will be assumed to be Jewish/Israeli.

I had a friend at school whose parents, newly arrived in South Africa from England, decided to give their son a 'local' name to help him fit in. Unfortunately, they gave him a very Afrikaans name, and since he grew up amongst English-speaking South Africans, his name was a source of constant ridicule.

yellowflowers · 18/05/2012 19:13

Love it. Think it's weird for a non Jew though

Trestle · 18/05/2012 20:20

It's quite nice.

LittlePandaBear · 18/05/2012 20:55

I think it's short for Avraham (Abraham) - I like it and have known two guys called it (both Jewish!)
