Cecilia or Cecily?

We can't decide! On the one hand we like Cecilia because it's more formal/traditional and a stronger female name. But the Simon and Garfunkel song is a bit irritating.

But Cecily is so pretty. But I wonder whether it's not a strong enough name and that it doesn't pass the high court judge test. (although I'm sure she is pretty unlikely to end up being a high court judge anyway).

What do you think?

Oh and I know the "blind" meaning and don't mind it.

Thanks everyone!

Cecilia for sure. It's strong and better as an adult. I think Cecily is a bit like Cecil i.e. male sounding.

Also Lia is nice shortening.

The s&g song shouldn't be reason to avoid Cecilia. Grin

Cecilia! Gorgeous name, on my list too Smile

MissLofPubia · 17/05/2012 19:21

Cecily. Though if you wanted some thing similar to Cecilia, I have a friend called Celicia, which I always thought was gorgeous and unusual. I think it's Greek.

Geranium3 · 17/05/2012 20:23

definitely cicely, much prettier and you wait in 40years time when your dd is indeed a high court judge!!!

Bluestocking · 17/05/2012 20:38

I like both Cecily and Cicely more than Cecilia, but all three names pass the QC test with flying colours.

MidWeekSlump · 17/05/2012 20:45

Much prefer Cecilia. Sounds like a name for a child and a grown up. Hard to imagine Cecily ever being 60.

IslaValargeone · 17/05/2012 20:47

Shall I just throw another into the mix for fun?
Cecile
If not go with Cecily.

Lexiesgirl · 17/05/2012 20:50

Cecilia, if I had to choose.

But then I have a lisp, and the odd thought that I might have been given a name like this gives me the cold sweats Grin

JudithTaverner · 17/05/2012 20:55

yes Lexiesgirl, we were joking earlier on about that - the current middle name choice is Alice, so if she turns out to have a lisp, she wont be thanking us.

anyway, dh has now said that he doesn't really like either name Hmm . maybe back to the drawing board.

Grin to your DH!

SneakyBiscuitEater · 17/05/2012 21:44

I love the 'hard to imagine Cecily being 60' comment. It is a total old lady name. I think about Hurcule Poirot's friend Cecily and Cecily Cardew in the importance of being Earnest both very Art Deco, hardly little girl only territory.

I adore the name Cecily but then I'm biased, I know a lovely 3 year old Cecily who has a real 'retro' look about her.

Redheadgal · 17/05/2012 22:07

Cecily. The mother of the kings. No contest.

Aribura · 17/05/2012 23:17

Cecilia can always shorted to Cecily. Go for Cecilia.

bibbitybobbitybunny · 17/05/2012 23:19

Just as an aside can I say that I like Celia v much more than Cecily or Cecilia.

ChocolateIsAFoodGroup · 18/05/2012 04:54

We (well, I..... Grin) am thinking Cecily for our DC3! Middle name will be June for my grandmother.

And I particularly love the Cecily Cardew reference! (also, our surname starts with a C).

Other name on our (my again....) list is Iris.

Let's both go for Cecily, is my vote!

JudithTaverner · 18/05/2012 06:50

can Cecily be a nn for Cecilia? or are they completely separate names?

I have spent all night thinking about this (my Cecily is a week old and doesnt do sleep!) and think I'm going round in circles a bit)

MrsFaffnBobbocks · 18/05/2012 10:55

Cecily gets my vote. Cecilia sounds like a complicated version of the simple Celia - to my ears anyway.

Lunarlyte · 18/05/2012 11:22

Cecily - it's very pretty and there is an awesome contemporary Fine Artist around named Cecily Brown. Her work is kind of a cross between Lucien Freud and Francis Bacon.

Formidable!

mintymellons · 18/05/2012 13:26

I LOVE Cecily or how about Cecile? Not keen on Cecilia though.

minipie · 18/05/2012 14:58

Cecily definitely. Much stronger sounding that Cecilia which is a bit too "frilly" for me.

And definitely passes the "judge" test.

Cecy or Cici are good nns.

AKMD · 18/05/2012 15:07

Cecilia is a gorgeous name.

I don't get it though - you already have one?!

JudithTaverner · 18/05/2012 15:51

no i dont, sorry the early post wasnt clear. i have a newborn who may or may not be Cecily, Cecilia or someting else altogether!

Booette · 18/05/2012 22:51

I prefer Cecily, it's a gorgeous name.

welovesausagedogs · 18/05/2012 23:29

I prefer Cecelia. Just think it sounds nicer.

AKMD · 19/05/2012 08:39

Ok, got it!

There is a beautiful (and nice) Cecilia in The Grand Sophy.

I just think Cecilia sounds elegant and pretty. Cecily sounds harsh to me.
