Does anyone not like the names they chose for their DC?

We're in the middle of trying to pick a name for our DC and are finding it hard. It has come to light that we are not going to agree on a name we both like equally so the chosen name will probably be a compromise for both us. We are also restricted by our surname.

My question is: did you love the name you gave to your DC or did you end up with a name you just quite like or even don't like in order to compromise with DP, fit your own specific criteria e.g. surname etc.

Does anyone not like their DCs names?

I'm concerned our choice is just going to be a practical one and feel sad about it forever! Is practical good enough?

We couldn't agree and Dp got his way in the end, she's 8 months old now and I still don't love it but it has become her name so I definitely like it more than I did just for the fact that it's her now iyswim. It helps that it actually suits her!

I wish it wasn't such a popular name though and still would have preferred my choice but I think I'm over it now :)

DS2 is 15 and I still don't like his name. It was DH's choice. At the time it was relatively unusual but it's become increasingly common and is very very often recommended on here. My main consolation is that when he is middle aged people will assume he is about ten years younger than he actually is.

DD's name was also a compromise choice. I still like the name very much though if choice had been entirely mine I wouldn't have picked it. Sadly it has become associated with one very tragic event and there are lots of threads on here were people consider it and everyone says they can only think of that one little girl. Sadly it even reminds me of said little girl who is same age as DD so I wouldn't choose it again either.

DD's name was a compromise, it was the only name that we found that neither of us disliked! So it's certainly not my favourite name, but it's a good solid timeless name that I think will never hold her back or make her feel embarrassed, and that was more important to me than anything else when it came to naming her.

When I was in latter pregnancy I was determined on the name Rafferty. I actually cried about it (I was a bit mental by this point; DS was 3 weeks overdue).

He looks nothing whatsoever like a Rafferty and I am so glad that DH totally refused to even consider it!

DD's name was really DP's choice - he had suggested it years before she was born and I said at the time I liked it, and it just really got assumed that that would be our daughter's name. It was still a 'compromise' name though as over the years we had vetoed a lot of each others choices.

Given a completely free choice I think I would have gone with a different name but it really does suit her. And its a nice name with a lot of options for nicknames.

I think compromise is good thing, if the choice is one parent hating the name. I also think that a compromise name ends up being a little more 'normal' (please, please don't flame me for that word) than some people's individual choices, which is probably a good thing for the baby in the long run.

What's your shortlist? Maybe the great MN Jury can help?

Thanks everyone.

Lexie - have just posted our shortlist!

DD3's name is not one I would ever have chosen, not in a million years. But I like it now because it is her.

My experience with DD1 was IDENTICAL to Daenerys - I wanted Mia, he wanted Naomi and so we had a stand-off. We compromised in the end but I didn't grow to really like it until she was about 1yo. Her name really suits her now and I do love it because I associate the name with her :)

Didn't make the same mistake with DD2. He wanted Kitty; I said 'no fucking way' and I chose her name. DD2s name goes really well with DD1s and they both have lovely meanings.

It isn't Mia or Naomi!! Lol

DD was a compromise but it suits her really well now.

I wanted a Welsh name, DP is German and failed on purpose to pronounce any of them properly. He was under pressure from his snobby family to pick a socially upward name (Sophia-Charlotta was bandied around). We picked a sweet yet funky name that didn't fall into either camp.
