Gagagalaxy · 17/05/2012 15:12

It's early days, I'm only 16 weeks, but thought I would start canvassing opinions. Obviously have no idea of gender but thinking about girls names today as they seem to be a lot harder.

I'd appreciate your brutally honest opinions on this little lot please...

Ivy
Ingrid
Seraphina
Ines
Aurelia
Alice
Harriet
Cecilia/Cecelia
Martha
Ariadne
Astrid
Thomasina
Lyra

I have no objections to any of these. I LOVE Harriet and would have considered it for any girl I had, mainly because of the character Harriet Vane in the Peter Wimsey books.

I like Cecilia better than Cecilia.

I found boys names harder, and then ended up with two boys....

StellaNova · 17/05/2012 15:17

DOH. Cecilia better than Cecelia.

Gagagalaxy · 17/05/2012 15:31

Yes Harriet is a lovely name. I'm pretty convinced I'm having a boy actually and the names I like are pretty standard and classic top 100 (probably top 50) names and my list is much shorter hence the reason why I find it easier.

I'd go a bit more 'out there' with a girl, not too unusual, but would prefer to avoid the top 10 Grin

I LOVE Ines - it's concise, a little bit exotic and quite classy in an understated way...

exoticfruits · 17/05/2012 16:36

Alice, Harriet or Martha.
Don't go for poison Ivy.

meditrina · 17/05/2012 16:48

Ivy - Tilsley from Corrie
Ingrid - OK if you have Scandinavian background
Seraphina - OK: are you Pullman fans?
Ines - lovely, but may be mispronounced, are you OK with correcting people
Aurelia -OK
Alice - lovely
Harriet - lovely
Cecilia/Cecelia - lovely (prefer first spelling)
Martha - like
Ariadne - fantastic name!
Astrid - OK if you have Scandinavian background
Thomasina - no, sorry

mathanxiety · 17/05/2012 16:59

Ivy
Ingrid
Seraphina
Ines
Aurelia
Alice
Harriet
Cecilia/Cecelia
Martha
Ariadne
Astrid

Lyra

The only one I dislike is Martha. The rest are fabulous imo. I especially love Ines, Thomasina, Lyra and Alice.

MoonHare · 17/05/2012 17:08

Ivy - love this
Ingrid - like this my cousin is called Ingrid, no Scandinavians in our family really don't think that matters
Seraphina - too flouncy for me
Ines - OK
Aurelia - again, too flouncy
Alice - like this
Harriet - like this, it's on our girls shortlist
Cecilia/Cecelia - not keen
Martha - love this
Ariadne - no
Astrid - love this, again who cares if you're Scandinavian or not
Thomasina - no
Lyra - ok

Have fun deciding!

Geranium3 · 17/05/2012 17:13

congrats and the time will whizz by! Funnily enough i found girls names far far easier which was lucky as i had all DD's!
out of your list i only like cecilia, seraphina and alice.

PeskyKidz · 17/05/2012 17:44

I likemost of your names other than Ingrid, which is a bit cold and hard, and Thomasina, which is beyond awful.

Lyra is a bit made up sounding. Martha is a bit 'meh'.

My favourites are Cecelia and Ines.

MarySA · 17/05/2012 18:15

Not quite so keen on Ivy or Lyra. But they are all quite nice names. I think I like Cecilia best. Other girls names I like are Rosemary, Violet, Iris and Pandora. I've never know a Pandora. Only in books.

nocluenoclueatall · 17/05/2012 19:28

Fab names OP. I don't normally comment on girls names (not a fan of most of them!) but yours I love so here goes:

Ivy - Reminds me of an old Primal Scream song, which is great, but not sure I'd want to be named after something so insidious.

Ingrid - love. Quite a sexy name though, in my brain for some reason.
Seraphina - fraid I used to know one of these, she's rather put me off. It's a little flouncy as someone else has said.
Ines - Fab. I imagine a rather amazonian beauty
Aurelia - not for me sadly. A bit too fabulous, if you know what I mean.
Alice - love. Simple, classic, not well used
Harriet - not for me, I know too many Harriets.
Cecilia/Cecelia - I think this might be a bit ruffly as well
Martha - love this. On my list too!
Ariadne - like, not sure I'd want to be called it
Astrid - love love love! My DS was going to be called this, until he turned out to be a little boy... (we're not Scandinavian by the way)
Thomasina - nope
Lyra - Okay, but not as outstanding as some of the others!

Good luck with your decision. It's quite fun isn't it?

Gagagalaxy · 17/05/2012 21:47

Thanks for the opinions Smile

It is great fun thinking about names, it's a big responsibility though isn't it. Still got a fair few months to mull it over.

At the moment I have my top girls name which is in amongst that list that I have LOVED for years and whenever I tell people their response is always quite negative. I wonder if it'll still be my top name in November (assuming this small human that I'm growing in my tummy is a girl )

Ivy - no, it sounds 'hard'
Ingrid - nice
Seraphina - no - too fussy
Ines - no
Aurelia - no: fussy
Alice - love it
Harriet - love it
Cecilia/Cecelia - I like Cecily
Martha - yes
Ariadne - yes
Astrid - yes
Thomasina - hate this, sorry
Lyra -ok

SerenityUndercover · 17/05/2012 22:05

Love:

Alice

OK:

Martha (a bit clunky though - prefer Tabitha as a similar/alternative)
Harriet
Astrid
Aurelia
Cecilia

Don't Like (sorry!!! just my opinion... I'm sure loads of people won't like my DCs names either but that's OK, we're all different!):

Ivy - short/harsh
Ines - short/harsh
Ingrid - harsh
Seraphina - fussy, perfume-like. The best of these in here though.
Lyra - a bit "meh"
Thomasina - clunky and totally unfeminine, no real decent shortenings other than (obvs) Tommy. Most girls won't thank you for this one in the future.
Ariadne - awkward to spell out x 10000000 in a lifetime

Any thing but Thomasina..

Love Aurelia and Martha.

Gagagalaxy · 18/05/2012 07:23

Serenityundercover - I think Sina is a lovely shortening of Thomasina, and of course Tamzin/Tamsin which is actually a derivative of this name.

And don't apologise for not liking names, that's your opinion which is exactly what i wanted Wink

Great list: I like them all in the abstract.

Applying the test of which of these would I, as an adult woman, like to have, I'd use:
Alice
Harriet
Cecilia
Martha

You're probably different to me so you might think, 'Yeah, I could imagine introducing myself as a Seraphina or an Ariadne!' and if so, great - put it on your list. I just think some of them are a bit clunky for day-to-day life and I'm not sure I'd want personally want to spell out my name every time I met someone new.

I don't think Ines sounds as pretty in English as it does in French and I think Thomasina is wonderful but they are just too many Thomases for me to use it.

ripsishere · 18/05/2012 11:13

I love Aurelia and Ines, I like Cecilia, Alice and Harriet, the others I am ambivalent about except Thomasina and Ingrid.
Ingrid always makes me think of Ronnie Barker's daughter in Porridge.
I am very old though.

Lunarlyte · 18/05/2012 14:45

Hiya, going to give you my automatic responses (I.e. Gut feeling, not thinking), hope that's okay!

Ivy - 'Ivy the Terrible' from The Beano; 'Poison Ivy'.Hmm, not sure I like this one
Ingrid - old Swedish woman
Seraphina - Sounds great, like the angelic tone
Ines - Lovely, although I am also thinking of an old woman (maybe this is a fault with me??)
Aurelia - Cool
Alice - Lovely; timeless
Harriet - Hamster
Cecilia - Like it, but prefer Celily as it sounds younger/fresher
Martha - Very sweet; cute
Adriane - Beautiful and quite exotic sounding. A strong woman.
Astrid - Hate it. Far too New Age for my liking.
Thomasina - No, not feminine enough
Lyra - Its alright; not particularly strong.

minipie · 18/05/2012 14:53

Grin at "early days, only 16 weeks" - I have been thinking about names since we started ttcing and possibly before that!

My favourites are Ingrid, Cecilia and Ariadne. I really like Ines but it seems a bit strange if you are not Spanish.

Ivy - It's ok.

Ingrid - Really like this name. Also like Inga
Seraphina - Pretty but a bit over the top. What would nn be?
Ines - Lovely (people will assume spanish heritage)
Aurelia - see comments on Seraphina
Alice - ok
Harriet - not keen (but I am unusual in this)
Cecilia/Cecelia - Like this name, I think Cecilia is the usual spelling. Prefer Cecily though. Cece is a lovely nn.
Martha - like
Ariadne - lovely
Astrid - it's ok. Bit too much like a car name.
Thomasina - not keen, sounds a bit "we wanted a boy"
Lyra - ok but a bit faddy.
