Thoughts on Turkish girls name, Antalya

We have one Turkish parent and one Dutch. Decided to go with a Turkish name for our DD, but something that will work well in England where she will be brought up.

Obviously Antalya is a place in Turkey and isn't actually a Turkish girls name, but we really like it as a name. We've met one English girl with the same name but some years ago now.

Any Turkish people out there who think it would sound silly to a Turk? Ie: Like a British persons naming their child 'London' for example?

I used to live in Turkey (although I am not a Turk) and it sounds odd to me.

What if Antalya becomes the next Benidorm? I mean what if its interntaional reputation is as a slightly tacky tourist resort? Or what if there is a terrorist atrocity there (no reason to think there would be but if the place becomes notorious for some reason you will regret the name).

There are loads of lovely Turkish girls names that work to the UK ear. I like:

Sevgi
Ayla
Seren
Serra
Irem
Leila

My dgd has a Turkish mum and English dad. Her name is Serra pronounced with a short e as in pet. No one has a problem with it. Deniz which is Turkish for sea is popular and so is Selen. She has a friend named Cemre pronounced jemry which is pretty. A lot of the names sound a bit harsh to us at first but I think the ones I have suggested do work.

I don't much like it as a name, too fussy. But as it isn't even a name but a place I'd say definitely no.

I live near Antalya and yes it does sound very odd to me! There are so many lovely Turkish girls names. I do know of a Talya though who is half Turkish half English.

I like Irem, Emel, Selen, Selin, Aylin, Sevil, Sevda, Esra, Esma, Melek, Defne, Ela, Ayla, Leyla and there are loads more. I only got to choose names for boys which we struggled with but would have been spoilt for choice with girls!
