Following on from the recent post on US names I remembered a good tool I found recently for names. I read it in an article somewhere, its a database created using the official name data that allows you to see the popularity of different names since 1996. You can use it to look at bits of names too so, like someone below wanted names ending with 'O', it can show you those and their popularity.

I found it quite fun, hope you will too. names.darkgreener.com/

What a great site! Totally addictive (just checked DS, DD, myself and DH's names Grin).

Same here! I've been through the names in this house, including the cats!

Ooh, I like this!

What's mildly interestingis that the graph shows rankings by number not ranking. So, for example, George was used more in 1997, but ranked 18, compared to 2010 where it was used less times but ranked at 9.

Is that because there were more names in 2010, so the rankings are more widely spread?

I guess it must be purely down to the numbers of it, propotionally more George's in 2010 than in 1997.

Partner is interested in alliteration with surname so I liked to used it to list all the names beginning with 'S' too.

What a lot of fun!

I just wish I could work out how to get it to list the names where the second letter is A. (long story)

littletomato · 17/05/2012 08:45

Stetsons: you can type .a into the box. the full stop acts as a wildcard. it takes some time to load, though!

StetsonsAreCool · 17/05/2012 16:49

Would you look at that, it works! Thank you, hours more fun Smile

I have just checked my own name it appears no-one has used it since 2006, it is not unusual and was a very popular 1970's name. Glad babies haven't been lumbered really as it has always been a pain with a hypen etc.
